Largest Full-HD screen for about 70K?

Re: Brought home the Panasonic 50X20D

Finally, we made the purchase after some last minute twists. We brought home the Panasonic 50X20D :yahoo: - it was a compromise. No Full-HD. But Dad got what he liked and Mom got the 50" screen she wanted. Cost 63K, got some cheap freebies with the TV.

We actually decided on the Samsung 46C550 LCD. Went to the store to get it today morning, and got the price down to 72K. At the last minute, the sales guy realized that they had the 46C530 in stock and not the C550. He offered the display unit which I refused. Seeing as there was not much diff between the C530 & C550, and not wanting to go back without a TV again, I decided to take the 46C530 and was trying to get him down to 70K for it.

Meanwhile the guy from Panasonic section noticed me and came over. Seeing that I was about to purchase the Samsung, he made a call to some one and said that they can give the 50X20 for 65K (down 3K from 68K yesterday). I stuck to 62K. Meanwhile the Samsung guy sensed the competition and was rushing me to OK the deal so that he can get the LCD from their godown.

The Panasonic guy came back with an offer for 64K. I got tired of this and said 62.5K was my final offer and if he didn't say yes in the next one minute, I will get the Samsung. He said 63K and was pleading to accept it. I called my Dad, and he was happy about getting the Pana instead of the Samsung. Mom was a bit down about not getting Full-HD, but I assured her that the difference between HD & Full-HD is negligible and no-way she can notice it with her aged eyes from her usual viewing distance. Closed the deal once they both agreed.

Dealer said will deliver in the evening, but I wasn't ready to wait. So drove to their godown and picked a pristine unit in factory packing and brought it home in my van. Just finished setting it up.

Tested with "Beauty & the Beast" HD and "Fifth Element" Full-HD. Picture is gorgeous. Everyone is blown away. Sound, though fell short of my expectations. Sound clarity was OK, but volume is far too low to fill the 18 x 20 room (maybe I missed some settings, have to read the manual). Picture was decent with cable and quite good with BigTV (Reliance).

Well, I am off to read the Panasonic threads and try to find the optimum settings for our unit.

Thanks for your suggestions & advice.

Cheers
Teja

Friend firstly congrats........
But I got to tell you one thing here. You paid way too much for the Panasonic. Maybe I guess you had fewer dealers in your city with whom you could have bargained.

By my estimates you could have got the Panasonic 50x20 for around 55k. If bargained even harder the price could come down to around maybe 52k. At the same time I will say that the price you were getting for Sammy 50c550 (68k) along with some freebies like the pen drive and Airtel DTH was actually quite decent. 68k minus 1.5k for the freebies comes down to around 66500 for the Sammy. Must say this was a very good price indeed. Even I am wanting to get this set for myself and this is just about the best price I have been able to bargain for the Sammy.

Here in Delhi the Panasonic 46X20 is available for around 45k and 42X20 is available for 35k. So it should not be difficult to get a price of around 55k for the 50X20.

Sorry if this post hurts you but I guess you missed the bus.

The Samsung 50C550 is a far better tv than the Panasonic 50X20

Hi sanjay,

One thing i don't get is on one hand you are not happy with your samsung
50C550 due to its picture quality & on the other hand you are highly recommending this tv to others and even advising it over panasonic plasma
which does not have such PQ issues as found in samsung & LG plasmas .

Happiness is a state of mind and my happiness for one is not dependent on any TV. :) Satisfied or not with a TV on the other hand is something that I can comment on. No electronics, or for that matter anything else in life, is perfect. There are some issues that I have noticed on my 50C550 but to say that I am not happy with it is not correct. In fact other than the slight banding issues, which too are only noticeable with poor quality signals, I am very very satsfied with the 50C550. I must also mention that I am more picky about things than most people and therefore issues I notice may not even be an issue for most. As for the Panasonics and LGs, they have their own set of issues and personally overall I find the Samsung 50C550 and the Panasonic 42X20 to be the best value in their respective sizes. Ofcourse the Panasonic VT20 is the best TV by a good margin, ie. if price is not a factor for you.

About price issue, people here tend to not realize that prices in smaller places , where sales are minuscule compared to places like Delhi and mumbai, are supposed to be higher. So price comparison is not valid. ;)

and seriously, it's technology, there can always be a problem no matter what you buy :D

hence, congrats on your purchase and as long you are enjoying the TV you shldn't care about what it wld have coted in mumbai or delhi ;)

And also I think there's 10% difference in vat between Delhi and AP...

hmm, that'd explain a lot, i am not sure about AP but price difference in HP is mostly due to that and extra transportation/road taxes

I am going to buy LG 50PJ350 this friday, price so far is 56k . I am expecting to get good discounts as I will be picking up two Plasmas ( both same), their 7KG top loading fully automatic washing machine and a double door refrigerator. all from LG :) so hoping that they'll atleast drop the price for Plasmas by 3k each -.-

Buddy , a simple advise for you. Here in Delhi a decent price-point achievable for a 50pj350 is 52k. Hope you get the same.
Possibly even 50k with hard bargaining.

Mate, a small piece of advise, if possible pls buy from you local shop (multibranded dealers) rather then big showrooms like LG shoppe, Croma, E-zone etc, with so many products you will definately get a much better bargain. You can window shop for best bargains here and quote the price to the local shop guy, am sure he will provide a better deal. This has been my personal experience recently.

Besides very less chance of getting a demo piece as small dealers dont stock too many items. All products are shipped directly to your home from the company warehouse anyways.

I am aware of that but sadly there are no such dealers over here :(

all we have is brand shops

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!:clapping: we demand ( request ) some pics :signthankspin:
Congratulations mate...ur breakin period begins...
Where are the pics sirji? :P
congrats teja . Interesting read from you . waiting for some more review.
Thanks fellas :)

Have been busy at work, but will post a review with pics this weekend.

I also studied the service menu (very cautiously ofcourse :D), it is quite interesting - I think there is lot of potential for calibrating & fine-tuning this TV, but need a proper guide. It is not at all intuitive. Will post some photos of the service menu too.

Cheers.

Totally not cool dude :p

Yes, prices will be cheaper in Mumbai/Delhi and other metros. But even so, getting the 50X20 for 55K is not realistic. For comparison, the 42X20 sells for 37K in my town. So it is only 6% more expensive compared to your Delhi pricing. Go and bargain with a Panasonic dealer, and you will know. Yes, I probably could have got the dealer down a bit more - to maybe 62K or 61K. But it is not worth the time & hassle to me.

On a side-note, we all pay huge premiums across the board for HDTVs in India. Full-HD 50" Panasonic Plasmas sell for $750 to $900 in US - that is Rs 34K to 40K. And you can get a 5-year warranty for another $100 or so. While here, we consider ourselves lucky to get the 50V20 for under 1 lakh. So chill man, and stop trying to suck the joy out of our new TVs.

What a coincidence! The main reason for my reluctance to go for the Sammy was the discussion between you and Imrahn in the 50C550 thread.

I bought this TV for my parents and wanted to be sure of a trouble free unit. Plus, my dad liked the Panasonic a lot over the Samsung 42" plasma that was on display there. If the 50C550 was on display he may have considered it, but it was not & he was unwilling to consider it without a demo. Nothing else to say here.

both are in different category so should not be compared.
Bingo. For us the comparisons and evaluations stopped the moment we brought the TV home.

For the sake of closure, one last comparison - the 50" LG & Sammy HD-ready plasmas are selling between 56K to 60K with 1 year warranty. For the extra ~5K I paid for the Panny, I got 3-year warranty and, IMO, a better brand. More importantly, it is what my Dad liked among the options presented to him. End of story.

I hope this topic will be allowed to rest now.

For the record, both my parents are extremely happy with the TV. I also presented a 500GB external HDD and a CinemaTube with the TV. My Mom is on a marathon of the 'Lord of the Rings' and the 'Harry Potter' series for the past one week :D

Cheers.
