Dear All,

Recently I have been to a Sony Showroom and tried to point out any differences between CCFL and LED back lit TVs of various sizes and to my surprise I could hardly find any difference between the two technology except the LED sets are much thinner and lighter and consumes less power then the CCFL sets. Both the technology gives same picture quality.

Your opinion please.

Thanks.

You are correct to an extent when you compare a low end LCD and a low end LED. With midrange and higher models, you might see the difference especially with Blu-ray contents. Modern LEDs use backlight scanning for better perceived picture depth and better motion handling. This can be achieved only by fast switching of LEDs and that cannot be done with CCFL.

With all due respect.. I feel you have posted this perhaps in the wrong section of the forum .... there is a separate section for Television ... this one is for projectors & screens

Only those LCD sets with edge or backlit LED array with local dimming will yield a better picture - read better blacks and contrast.

Otherwise other LED lit LCDs will only have slightly brighter picture as compared to the CCFL LCDs.

Of what i have noticed while comparing the two .... LEDs would have brighter pic as well as much (quite) higher colour depth than LCDs. The LCDs, if carefully observed, whould have a whitish pic quality ... which looks slightly washed out IF compared side-by-side, that too, when configured to ones desired adjustments. Only, very careful observation would bring out this difference.

LEDs are definitely brighter as I have said. CCFL LCD TVs suffer from uniformity issue as highlighted in this article. Even LED TVs suffer from the picture uniformity issue but to a slightly less extent.
