hi all
a naive question ..
For the sound card ..I see three holes
one is line out .. I connect the speakers pin
one is mic .. it is for mic for chatting
what is this line in for ..and what is it used for ..?

thanks

line is used in case if you want to connect a any audio device that is giving an audio stream so you can record it in your system..

say radio or casette deck and any audio device...

Microphone and instrument inputs, by contrast, are designed for devices which require further amplification to be at line-level.

type of connector found on audio devices to attach a device, such as a microphone, for recording audio. Line-in can be analog or digital. Digital line-in is also called optical line-in.

theironhorse, I disagree with your last statement. Line In is analogue, not digital. It is the opposite of Line Out, and, in connecting things together, they are made for each other :)

i'm sure the power handling, levels, and electrical properties of both must be defined somewhere, else more things would explode when we connect them. They work at line level, I guess!

Or play back using your multi media speakers

There is NOTHING as Digital Line In. Line In/Out talks of STANDARDIZED LINE LEVEL ANALOG Input/Output. Also, Digital Audio In/Out does not necessarily mean Optical In/Out.

How about this...

Two kinds of input/output: analogue and digital
Two kinds of analogue input/output: line-level and balanced
... plus a third for headphones! (fourth for mic, fifth for turntable?)
Two kinds of digital output: optical and coax
There are many confusing abbreviations/acronyms like ADAT and SPDIF

Hi
One can connect any audio output thru (headphone jack) of Radio/Mp3/Amp and the same can be heard thru yr spkrs and can be recorded on yr media player etc
Wlg

You can connect a headphone out to a line in --- but turn down the volume to zero first and then turn it up cautiously.

Headphone out and line in are not made for each other. It's commonly done, but must be done with care.

Your mistake is inserting the word "line," I think?

There are all kinds of ins and outs, and this cars is blistering with them ;) but line in and out has a specific, analogue meaning.

And I wouldn't trust Soundblaster to define anything! Pure prejudice, from the days when they were the reason that nobody ever thought you could ever get decent sound from a PC, and I'm sure that, just like on-board sound chips, they have improved out of all recognition.

Actually, my last para is not really fair, because I guess they did define the system of coloured sockets for connecting various combinations of speaker systems, headphone, mic, etc of the basic domestic soundboard.

Line-level connections originate in the hifi world, and pre-date all this sound-card stuff. They might even predate the PC itself?

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
