Linn sondek LP 12 -A brilliant performer

From one with such huge experience, it is indeed quite something.

Jacob, I seem to remember that you were very impressed with your previous acquisition. And now this! What a wonderful life you have :)

congratulations jacob! your initial feedback reiterates my thoughts on this table. i never really miss having a idler (it would be good to one day have one); but the LP12 really keeps me busy over weekend. it sounds plain amazing. as they say - "music flows"

just yesterday i was listening to love over gold, brother in arms and some elton johns...boy, did they sound sweet!

For setting it up and balancing the suspension, Gerry_the_Merry should be able to conduct master classes.

@Mr Kuruvila: I am guessing the Ittok has a big role to play in the sound. That's one reputed arm you have there. Give it a 103 and it should sing.

Yes I am impressed with many of my coveted Turntables but the sound of Linn is what I find close to my heart. It is what I was searching for. Of course, I like my Garrards, Thorens 125, JP, Technics SP-25, lenco 75 and Dual 1019 all in it's own strengths. The great thing about these vintage beauties is that these are the pride of it's manufacturers and they have put in their best to make them as good as they can.

I am using Yaqin MS 12 B phono pre and I will rate it as quite good . I also have a Hafler DH 101 and NAD PP2. My integrated is Prima Luna Prologue One

this is the bottom line, these vintage TTs cannot be beaten even today, not to forget the pride of ownership and listening pleasure.

I believe that many new Turntables in the markets with exception to the really high-end ones cannot make Turntables in the same quality as these vintage ones because of the material cost and labor now and then. I recently got a lot of Technics Turntables for refurbishing and I am amazed by the quality of their build and the components. Even the plastic gear wheels are of so good quality, I am not surprised why they still perform so well after all these years.

The LP12 sounds best with a Linn Phono Stage, Power supply and Linn MC. Period. We just booked the first 40th Anniv LP12 for a client .

I too have an LP12 Vintage which I must restore to its glory when I do have the time.!

What is the model no of the Linn MC and how much does it cost?. I do have several sources for phono besides what I have mentioned above including a few DIYs. I like my music warm and I give importance to lows and mids more than HFs though I have noticed that what comes from a Linn is balanced overall.

so very true. i believe the quality/tolerance levels of the Motor/bearings were at a very different levels then and motors were designed specifically for that turntable/platter combinations.
today the TTs done this way mostly get stratosphere-i-cally priced :(

I recently read somewhere that Monarch Direct Drive Turntables is using the Technics motor to drive it. I am not sure where I read it but if it's true, it's a tribute to Technics for it's quality build

John.K.Anthony had come and listened to the Linn the other day. The base extension that one gets from the Linn is quite outstanding. The Goldring 1020 GX is in fact sounding very nice on the Linn. I am considering a good MC for it in future. For the time being, I will stick to Goldring

Congratulations KJ. I can feel your enthusiasm all the way here. LP12 was the first high end turntable I heard, few years back. It was the most satisfying listening experience and the sound remains in my memory even today. It became an object of desire for me too. Recently I heard the LP12 again with a much higher configuration (Naim ARO tonearm, Lyra Helikon cartridge & Lehmann Blackcube SE phono), and this time I was again blown and by a bigger margin this time. This TT is special no matter with all the criticism it attracts. The natural pitch and flow of music it delivers is an absolute reference even today. At least I have not heard any TT replicate that. Only if one compromise a bit of frequency extension and holographic soundstaging, it is a TT for life. Now, that Linn has come out with many upgrades to the TT, tonearm and cartridge, improving the LP12 is easy without letting it go, no wonder there are so many multi-decade users of LP12:clapping:.

You are absolutely right Dr.Bass. No player can deliver the way LP 12 delivers even with Linn Attok 2 arm and Goldring Cart in my case. I am only planning to upgrade cart and phono stage in the near future
