How important is the port location of the Subwoofer? My living room interiors are such that I HAVE to place the sub next to my floorstanders, flush against the wall (actually about 6 inches gap between the wall and the sub). Do I have to look for downfiring subs or rear-firing subs would be OK? If the sub port is against the wall, what is the impact on the bass? My current Sub is a JBL HTIB bundled sub with an 8 inch driver and front-firing.

Port location is not a factor to be concern about as long as it is about speaker design. But speaker placement is to be considered keeping port in mind. Keep enough breathing space for the port.

In your case either down firing or front firing design would be desirable with port firing in front or top direction.

I'm a little confused here. How much breathing space would a port require? It cant be a lot. Because all downward ported subs will never have more than about an inch of space to breathe!

Am I assuming correctly here? Or is the downward porting design made in such a manner that they dont require that much breathing space but the front and rear ported ones do?

Placing a woofer against the wall or in the corner will give better bass response than placing it in center.

The 6 inches gap from the wall would be more than enough.

The best thing you can do is move the sub here n there and settle it where you get the best sound.

port should be clear from all sides (including the inside of the sub) by more than the dia of the port.

First place the sub where you would actually sit and at the same height as your ears. Play some music with good bass. Now crawl around in the room around the place where you would like to place your sub and listen for the best subwoofer response. Place your sub where you find the best bass response (as per your taste).

Don't worry about the port direction. If it is back firing, you can always keep it turned around with the port facing you if you want it that way.
