I auditioned the Project Debut III yesterday. Thanks to Ali for setting it up with the MA RS6 speakers.
The model on display had a built in Phono module, which Project claims is same as the "Project Phono Box II". The sound was smooth, deep and refined. I liked it.
It is generally believed that a separate phono box produces better sound. I am sure a separate Project Phono would not give a significantly different sound from what is already on board. So the options are back to NAD PP2 and CA 640P. Unfortunately, the NAD PP2 seems to have more cost involved in Bangalore, so the price is almost same as the CA 640P. It is cheaper than the PP2 in other countries/cities.
There is no way to audition these units. I mostly like the NAD family sound over CA but the CA unit has been getting better reviews. The higher price for NAD in Bangalore makes it less attractive, as you can get the more expensive CA box at the same price. The CA unit seems to have a higher gain. I wonder if that, along with a leaner CA sound, leads people to believe that it is better.
Any first hand experiences?
Thanks,
Sharad
