What do you think are the best options for a 50" HDTV with smart features.
Constraint: Budget.. trying to keep it well within a lac..
Saving grace: don't care about 3D :D
Any experience with neoplasma? I reckon LED would blow my budget and LCD I am not so keen on somehow.

why not wait for the 2012 panasonic launch and then have a look at prices. Plasma would be your best option and any model with neop pdp panel should be good. Unfortunately 3D is by default, like it or not............most tv's now are being launched with 3D. And any tv in a lac with have full 3D support.

In the 2011 line up ST30 is definitely a winner!!!

thanks will check it out..
btw how does TH-P50UT30D stack up against ST30D... also heard 50D would be launching soon.. what are the major differences between UT, ST & VT? and that between ST30D & 50D?

Panasonic caters to different price segments and therefore have different plasma models across all price ranges. From top to bottom:

VT (neo pdp panel)
GT (neo pdp panel)
ST (neo pdp panel)
UT
XT
X

As you can see VT being the top of the line and X being the budget entry level. If going for Panasonic, you should go for any of the plasma pdp panel models. That is what separates Panasonic from the others. UT is a entry level 3D tv but without the neo pdp panel. ST is also 3D WITH neo pdp. For more info :

getting a deal on ST30 for 93k minimum and a Samsung 5500 for 81k
am leaning towards samsung primarily due to
a) price
b) hope that samsung store for apps would be a safer bet than panasonic

any views?

I am tracking this thread as I am also in dilemma between Panasonic 42ST50 and Samsung ES6200. I have short listed these two models due 3D feature. Unfortunately I have shortlisted these model without any demo, just going through various online reviews and user experiences.

if picture quality is your top priority go with ST30, if apps and other features are you priority then Samsung might have an advantage. But the essential pre requisite of any tv should be superior picture quality!!!

St30 stands no chance infront of E550, may be ST50 would be better than E550 but ST30 is definitely not better than E550, Plus i got quote of 78k on E550 i think i can still ask dealer to lower the price.

If you are not inclined towards a specific brand then do not go to exclusive/company showrooms. Go to showroom that deal multibrand. Compare multiple brands & models simultaneously by playing the same HD & SD content. Try playing some fast scrolling/action content to see if there are any noticeable drag. IMHO, picture quality should be the first preference, then the bells and whistles.
Samsung provides better margin for dealers. Hence in general, dealers will try to push Samsung.
There may be some help for you in my recent review on TV which I bought 6 months ago.

How about waiting for ST50 plasma ? It's brilliant going by reviews :) Also I would say go for Panasonic and not Samsung as Panasonic has better picture quality and 3D performance is brilliant too, not to mention better quality control.

Panasonic ST50 no doubt would improvise over the previous series, but would really cost a lot more. Also not sure what models from the 50 series are being launched in India. If budget is not a constraint then definitely 50 series would be better.
