Hello people. my name is chirag b. I was active 10 years ago when I bought my 1st hifi setup. This forum was really helpful. On the verge of buying my 2nd hifi setup. Thanks for having me.

Welcome back Chirag
Do share your first hifi setup and your plans for the second one.
Cheers

I had a pair of KEF R700 floorstanders, a musical fidelity m6i integrated amplifier and a oppo 105 I think it was. I have long since sold them as they were not getting the play time they deserved. I had even posted my auditions of speakers all over mumbai somewhere in this forum

But now i want to get back into the game. I have finalized my speakers.
The JBL HDI 1600 bookshelf speakers.
I'm just looking for the right IA for these speakers as they are low sensitivity 4 ohm at 85db speakers and need power to flex. I'm targeting a 150 and above watt amplifier I really wanted the arcam sa20 as they supposedly have a 5 year warranty in India and rated at 150w at 4 ohms but that's out of stock everywhere. But yeah I'm doing my research reading user reviews looking through forums, calling distributors finding the best prices discounts etc.
Thanks for asking
Let's see what I finally end up with

Hi Chirag

Welcome back to HFV.

I am sure you already find your experience here very enriching and enjoyable.

All the best!

Welcome back ! on your choice of speakers, you are going with a 4Ohm 85dB tough to drive speaker. this will mean your choice of amps will need to be limited to high power able to drive upto 3.2 ohms ( since impedance will drop by around 20% across the range)

If you can, more benign speaker might give you more options but if you really like this speaker then do choose your amp with the right analysis on compatibility.

@arj and other knowledgable members, what are the acoustic advantages of a low impedance speaker, if any? I am asking for the advantage that accrues by being low impedance. Is it a tighter control on bass (given a powerful enough amp to drive it)? Or anything else/more?

I am not very knowledgable but the little I could understand over the years is that the impedance is not it what tis designed for but is one of the parameters which need to be balanced with regard to Drivers, enclosure ,crossovers etc in the end Lower impedance means Higher current need and lower power as well as Most car speakers are 4 ohms.

While i did say higher power above , thats is more due to the higher current requirement since most Audio amps are not able to give higher current at the speed speakers need it especially below 4 ohms..and thats one of the reasons why, lower power amps can sound more powerful than higher power amps with some speakers.

Happy to hear views from our DIY experts here !

I am imagining (wildly) that low impedance is a result of having smaller/tighter drivers employed to get frequencies that larger, more flexible drivers (higher impedance) are capable of producing more easily. There has to be some sonic advantage to do that (employ smaller/tighter drivers) beyond mere space saving. I would like to know that benefit.

Pardon me if I’ve made some very gross errors in the above (terms or hypothesis wise). I am a total layperson.
