On a tight budget i.e. around < Rs. 40,000 (maybe even less) how comparable is the performance of a top of the range home theatre system by major electronics (Samsung / Philips / Sony etc) versus Component based systems (basic systems like onkyo hts 3500 or similar receiver + 5.1 setup)

Though power ratings don't mean much, mainstream systems quote ridiculors power ratings at say 30% THD, which is basically lots of terrible noise. There is no specs that mentions what their THD might be perhaps at much lower power output. Will a 150 watt per channel @ 30% THD system produce, say clean <5% audio at around 40-50 watts ?

Any opinion / pointers about value in Singapore / Dubai about international warranty etc is also appreciated. Comparing prices online, there seems to be little difference.

With regards,
Raghu

Hi Raghu,

A Component based HT system @ any budget will easily pip the mass market HT systems...

International warranty doesnt apply to any of the brands like Onkyo/ Yamaha/ Denon / Maratnz / Pioneer AVR's...

In india price of AVR are always insane compared to international prices except few brands (Pioneer)...

If you plan to get anything abroad, get it from Dubai as there is Dubai Shopping festiavl going on till Feb 2nd....

THD and SNR, both are screwed in mass market HtiBs as compared to component system and the most important missing feature is the support of multiple HDMI inputs, ARC, multi zone playback (if you need it), etc. Also upgradeability is restricted since you cannot upgrade just amplifier since it is clubbed with the DVD-P etc. Also most mass market products have passive subwoofers I believe.

IMHO two-zone operation / multi input HDMI are not key factors, am happy to plug a cable out and plug it in and don't think will need multiple sources..

The quality of audio is certainly the deal-breaker for me.

Any idea about Samsung vacuum tube based amps. They seem to have really good reviews and pack just about every feature for around 40k

Also, most of these high-end systems pack HDMI inputs (2) which I think is more than enough for regular use.. Has anyone tried such products . it would be great if they can share their experience. I will almost certainly check them out in a store if possible.

I would start with the pre owned section of our forum with a budget of Rs. 40,000.

Just as example there is a Marantz 5002 + Pioneer DVD 610 for about Rs 23,500. The rest can be used to buy a decent pair of floor standers/stand mounters and you are on your way to own a decent system.

I do not say necessarily this pair but used would be the way to go.

Or if you insist on NEW then a good AVR with a pair of decent stand mounters. Then add speakers when budget allow.

A slow build to a decent HT system is always the way to go, when budget is a restriction.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
