Dear All,

Planning to buy a Marantz SR5005 as a second amplifier from Hifi Mart.Being a phased out model its available at only Rs 35000/-.

My main requirement is for Music (80%) and Movies (20%). I have space limitation therefore it will not be possible to put two amplifiers for each job.

My main query is how does the SR 5005 perform in the 2 Channel Music area......

Most HT amps dont perform well in Music , is it so for the 5005 ?

Kindly discuss.

Thanks.:)

Deba, i heard SR5005 couple of weeks back.. it was fine for stereo music but was weak for movies.. it should do fine for your requirement.. but do keep in mind that AVR wont give you performance like a dedicated stereo amp untill n unless u r going for high end AVRs..

Get an audition of this avr and u'll get a fair idea about its sound..

Since about 2 years ago, the newer offerings from Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo and Marantz are better music performers than older versions. The 5005 is comparable to Yamaha 67x, Onkyo 7xx and Denon 1911. When I did an audition of Denon & Marantz and Onkyo, I felt that Marantz and Denon were very close in performance. The Onkyo was a close 2nd. So if you cant audition a Marantz right away the Denon will give you a very good idea of how it might sound.

make your call.

Can I play 2.0 (NOT 2.1) stereo with the 5005 ? It says so in the manual but how to switch the 2.0 mode ?..Kindly suggest.....

Pure Direct mode.. It bypass all the circuitary and play in 2.0 mode..

why are you buying avr with that heavy focus on music? For an occasional movie, you can use stereo setup. Whatever player you will use - tata sky, or blu-ray - will have a stereo analog out. You may skip HDMI if you can switch source in TV and amp.

I have heard few receivers on a stereo mode - Onkyo/Yamaha/ Denon & Marantz... Marantz will have a standout performance from the rest especially when u engage them in Source direct mode (2.0)

I was using Onkyo HTIB 2.1 mode for stereo... After moving to Marantz Source direct (2.0) mode, i didn't feel the need for subwoofer.. You will not get a floor shaking bass, but what is juz required... Very apt, precise sound... I am telling you this after owning the Onkyo for 3 yrs & Marantz for 1.5 + yrs...

Frankly I don't understand why folks put up with or would consider an avr that is good for movies but not good for music. A movie is mostly soundtrack (music) and dialog (voice). So how does an avr become good for movies but not for music?

An avr "good for movies" is nonsense and is a poor avr. Often, as the case for Denon, it means it has bloated bottom heavy one dimensional bass and recessed and lacking midrange. I think folks get fooled because they one-dimensionally think and are impressed by overloaded bass and that makes the poorer avr "good for movies". The "gunshots were better" review someone provided a link to above was an example of this.

Always select for music. If one is hearing palpable instruments, voice, and drums then one will certainly hear good/decent explosions or other effects. One can then better enjoy the music/soundtrack and voice in a movie rather than being rattled by hyped one dimensional explosions.

Though Denon and Marantz are owned by the same parent company the product lines are separate and very different.
Marantz makes good entry level high end equipment and will sound very musical. I do think their recent line of avr sr6006 is better than the older lines. But the older models are still quite good.

Also note that the Marantz new model sr5006 is $900 (USA) so not any more expensive than the older model you are looking at unless there is some default markup in India...
