it's a hidden secret - it's an apple tv first generation. With atv flash (I purchased, so add that to the cost) will allow you to attach an external hard disk via usb. Then you sync with your laptop and you are good to go. No need to connect with a laptop anymore.

But once done, it works like a champ.
And apple remote is too good that works on ipad/ iphone/ itouch.

does this have a screen?

apart from apple tv (and the hd), what else do you need to get it operational?

I am talking about 1st generation (white) appletv, not the black ones.
It does NOT have a screen.

Instead you use remote as display - the remote is an iphone/ ipad or ipod touch. In my case it is an ipad2.

I am currently using my E series Walkman to play digital media file through analog out to Norge amplifier. I am not too happy with the audio quality. If I use something like squeezbox Touch in place of Walkman, will there be any improvement in audio quality? Squeezbox will also give me additional functions like wifi streaming etc.

guys help me understand comparison of media player (asus oplay mini) digital out (optical) with avr (dac of avr) sq against same system with external dac introduced after media player.

When you feed digital source (Asus oplay) then only receiver's DAC will be used which the receiver will convert to analogue and amplify.

Asus Oplay (Digital)-> External DAC (Analogue) -> AVR (Direct or Bypass mode) -> AVR Amplifier Amplify Analogue -> Speakers

When you feed digital source to external DAC and then to AVR then receiver will just amplifying a signal that's already analogue if your setting in AVR is Pure Direct or Bypass Mode. If not then analog signal will be converted to digital using the receiver's ADC then it will be send to DSP and finally the digital signal will be sent to AVR DAC.

Asus Oplay -Digital-> External DAC- Analogue -> AVR -Analogue -> ADC-Digital -> DSP - Digital -> AVR DAC - Speakers


SQ quality will depend on what external DAC and also on the AVR one is using. You have to experiment to find what sound the best.

btw doesn't squeezebox have its own dac?

SBT DAC uses AKM4420, 44.1k, 48k & 96k chip.
