Looking to buy a 50 inch plasma. My usage for this tv is very basic, only SD channels via STB. no HD, no PC connectivity, 720P is alright. Viewing distance of about 15 feet, no direct sunlight/bright lights as such.

Metro bangalore had an offer for a panasonic 50 inch 3D tv going for about 49k (not sure on the model, it might have been the x series i think). is that a good price or is it available cheaper else where?

Can someone help me with a few brands/model numbers to look out for?

Im open to grey market purchases only if there is a significant price difference.

Cheers!

50" is too big a TV for SD channels even at 15' viewing distance.
besides plasma consume a lot of power too.
higher the screen area, more the power consumption. you will be better served by a 42 incher.
for starters, samsung series 4, panasonic X series are recommended.
there are numerous threads discussing pro's and con's of each. going through these will give you some ideas.:)

I think at 15 feet all TVs look good even for SD. Do you remember seeing the Sammy E550 plasmas? I am desparate for a tv but not finding the E550 in blore

Whats your budget kooki...

Samsung 470 is the cheapest available for 55k. You can also check Pannasonic XT50 at 60-61k and few LG models as well.

there is a rule when buying tv's...........ALWAYS go for the biggest tv you can!!! 15 feet is a lot. For HD you should be sitting at 6-8ft for 1080p and about 12ft for SD. So please rest assured 50inches is not big at all. Please do not go for 42inches when you can get 50.
If Panasonic go with 50X50 or 50U30. The X50 is better than X30 with a new brighter panel. Samsung also makes good entry level plasma.

My neighbor bought this last week from Metro on the same deal, for 49K. He has about the same viewing distance as you mentioned and the picture from his videocon STB look quite good from the seating position. I lent him my 720p movie collection on my external drive and the result was awesome. He said he checked the price at various places and he couldn't find a better deal, not even anything closer. So, if you are okay with a Plasma, sounds like a good deal to me.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
