Today it has come to a point where people are saying that running a standalone store for CDs and DVDs makes no business sense, most existing large stores that sell audio CDs have reduced their store area dedicated to this section.
I think the first Music world was started around 1997 in Chennai and it was India's biggest music shop, the shop did really well and they got into expansion mode into other cities. They also had a annual music sale which was India's biggest music sale with around 40,000 titles on sale with good discounts but they stopped this sale when sales fell. When audio CD sales fell at their store they dedicated more space to movies as they thought movies would do better, they then reduced the size of the shop but nothing worked and they finally shut down.

Even online - folks like flipkart are not having a good run.... inferred by the limited choices available online. Its only the product mix that keeps them going.
There are no PURE CD online sales portals ( maybe except rhythmhouse.in ) to my knowledge.
Please correct me if required.

You are right, a pure physcial media retailers like Rhythm house is backed up by their physical store and their passion for the business like some one pointed out is the reason for their survival.
I guess tough competitions from online retailers like flipkart made music world to exit...
anyways amazon.in is here to offer in this regard.
I hope they start selling audio CDs, right now they seem to be having only movies and there is no mention about music. But I am not very impressed by the limited listing information for the movies on sale and this is a problem with almost all online retailers. For physcial media like CD/DVD or Blu-ray the back side of the package has a lot of information like track listing,
sound formats, language options, extra material, manufacture's info and other details but hardly any online retailer provides this information in their listing. A simple scan or photo of the back side of the package will be enough and right now we still have to depend on local stores if we want any information listed on the package.
