1)Avr 2700+heights sattelite onkyo=65k(5 months of warranty left with AVR)
2) clearance sale subs=39k (sonodyne dual sub)
3) 2 pairs of micca 0o0 plus one single center piece Rs.29000
4) ups Rs.5000 approx
5) wiring and cable Rs2400

All coming to a little less than Rs.141000. With ATMOS setup. I am sure according to HFV standards, this is a good price. My other 7.2 cost me 1.11 with a second hand 13 year old Pioneer AVR which can't upmix ATMOS but good enough to watch movies with good sound effects. Grand total of 2.5 lakhs. This forum gave me the idea of second hand AVR, Clearance sale sub-woofers (l4S fmer especially), inexpensive Micca 0o0 speakers and gave me confidence to do some cabling myself. The other good part about this forum is they taught me how to DIY a few things so that I save tons of money plus hassles on dependence of technicians.

I think I would have saved about a lakh and 25k easily. And with my collection of ps4 games discs and BR movie collection of 130 titles, I can safely assume these are tantamount to complementary. The guest lobby 7.2 powered by pioneer is exclusive for my kids to unleash their craving on games. (I stopped watching movies in this setup after the denon 2700 sound stage was set)

But the sad thing is my family thinks these are vestigial luxury money waster! Srilanka and Pakistan reels with economic problems and I am spending lavishly according to them. Kindly comment to help me understand in tech-saavy zeitgeist, if I am right or wrong?

There is no right or wrong in this hobby. Remember it is a hobby, expensive but a harmless hobby.

If you have the money to spend, nothing wrong in spending on what you like. If money is not used to buy the things that you need (want?), then why do we earn money. No point, eh?

Of course, be prudent. It is a worthy investment if done rightly.

PS: Pakistan and Srilanka are in trouble due to their respective goverment's bad economic policies. One individual can't help a country. We feel sorry for them. We can only pray that our leaders learn from our neighbours and act wisely.

Enjoy your setup.

Music has been an integral part of human culture since ages.
Try listening music for a couple of months, 30 minutes everyday without distractions. And then see the difference it brings in you, both mentally and physically.

It's a usual area of discussion - when someone wastes food, people will say "do you know many people are starving out there" and for these non essential spends, according to them, they would bring in a comparison.

Dr.Prateek, I do listen to music. Intact I listen to Hindu, English, tamil, Russian, Telugu music. Daily routine I would not say but random routine according to mood. But thanks for the suggestion. Gosh! Slowly I might start looking for integrated amps and may knock off another huge chunk! ;)

Like others suggested this is a expensive hobby, but the rewards are fruitful if done right.

I had suggested a setup for a friend and bought iy 2021 ending. It is close to your budget.
Denon x1600h for 38k
QB12 40k
QA 3020i 25k
QA 3010i 20k
QA 3090i 16k
JBL ceiling 10k

We did not buy everything at once, got what was available at the best price over a span of 4-5 months. This way it wasn't a burden and we could wait for best price.

Now its time for you to enjoy what you have with you, get the calibration right and have fun.

There is no right time or wrong time. The recession created a mess in 2007 then later Covid, my take is simple, it is a matter of luck that you can get a system within the right budget, sometimes you gamble waiting for prices to drop or for something better to come. End of the day it all matters of what you want and when you want to fulfill it. I did face the same music years back and my simple reply was that as long as I have fulfilled my financial obligations and spending my own money as whats left after all obligations, thats my decision and enjoyment. After that no more budget talks and now they love the system!

So don't beat yourself mentally, after a couple of months, it will be all forgotten.

That price was amazing - now it will cost about 75k more. You don't get 1700h for anything less than 70k (that too you need to commit the entire gear - nobody sells only AVR at sub MRP prices these days) QB12 is going at 60k but sometimes you get some clearance sale at about 48k here and there.

In last year and a half, I spent on a 65" oled and 75" LCD/LED too to top it. That's like 7 lakhs including the surround stages. I am trolled left right and centre at times by my family. Your empathy means a lot. Thanks.

Yup, we waiting like a sniper to hit the perfect head shot. Found a good deal, literally went within an hour to collect it.

Never never, tell them the cost of things. Just say its lot but thats what I do, as average Joe's don't understand the pleasure all these things give us.

There are FMs spending more than that on just a turntable and keep mum about it.
For Parliament , follow 10% rule.

Spending around 50k would buy one a decent stereo setup, which is an investment if used properly.
And this setup would easily last 15 years or even more of used with care.
So who says it's an expensive hobby..
And for change, people change speakers, I prefer to change the songs to keep the expenditure low.. ;)

Could you give an example pls? Which stereo amp in particular? I had an idea to buy through hifimart a combo of Marantz PM6007 plus Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 for 66k current price. But went ahead with surrounds.

If longevity, price and performance is criteria then something like crown XLS 1502..
One could apply low pass filter to protect the speakers.
Source can be a Bluetooth receiver connected to a phone which has subscription to have access to at least 320kbps music.

This would be the best solution for this price in my opinion ( opinions might differ so inputs are welcome as it could help many achive decent sound budget friendly prices)

Don't your family spend on luxuries ?
Going to a restaurant for dinner is also luxury. For the cost one spends in a restaurant at least 10 people would get a days worth of food.
;)

Family has their own induvidual priorities, they will never understand, you need to make them intolerant to your hobby and it's spendings, it takes a long long time( could be a decade in my case) but at one point they reach the conclusion where they are fed up and are like, do what you want we are done and we will just enjoy the fruits of your hobby ( great entertainment). from that point onwards you are good to go :)

Good point. It's often an argument on why grape over cherry. I have postponed their dream vacation or a necklace or a seed capital for tomorrow's college education for kids and the list goes on. In Lage raho Munna bhai movie, an advice to a guy who loses money in stock in a boring traditional style by Munna bhai on a Gandhian trance state - "confess and then start to save yet again" is something inevitable. They know it's a lot of money. Have not told specifics. Or after a few months of frugal lifestyle, will tell them the numbers.

Have you done any room treatment ? If not it will just cost you just 1/4th of the money you have spent currently but you will get atleast twice or more output /presence what you are getting on your current system..... This you will never regret of spending wrongly all over the life.

Maybe after a few months of frugal economics I could do that.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
