My experiment removing record warp

As like many others I am also having few warped records and keen on removing (?) those warps from records. After google and search in forums I decided to try the common method of placing warped record in between two Glass Plates in warm environment. The result and conclusion after six months experiment is as below. May be useful to vinyl lovers

First I sourced two 14 x 14 inch size 8mm thick Glass. I selected a warped thin CBS India record Love in Goa album. Since in my house direct sun light is limited, decided to warm the glass by other way. I used a 10W night lamp just above the glass. After an hour just checked the glass surface and still it was cold. Concluded the 10W lamp is not sufficient and increased to a 40W lamp with a metal reflector (believed this radiate (?) heat towards glass). This was given a mild warm over the glass area.

I left the setup for a week and taken out the record. Surprisingly the result was shocking. The warp increased and record edges are fully like small waves.

I just asked myself what went wrong to increase the wrap and concluded two things.

1. The record surface is not uniform. The inner lable area and outer edges are thicker than the grove area. This does not permit uniform pressure of glass plate over record surface.

2. The constant mild heat may be the other reason to deform.

To outcome this I decided to use natural day and night temperature difference. Usually the day and night temperature difference is almost 10C in most places. All materials invisibly expand in day and shrink in cold night. If we apply uniform pressure in right direction desire shape may obtained. The speed of this process depend factors like thickness and Plasticity of the material, Temperature difference, amount of Pressure and duration.

To apply uniform pressure over the record grove surface I used paper board. Bought 250GSM thick Paper board and prepared two circular cut sheets with 300mm outer diameter with a center hole for the record lable area as shown in picture.

Placed this paper sheets between both Glass plates just above and below of record. Please note here once you place record over the bottom side paper sheet it is not possible to align the center of paper sheet. To overcome this I marked edges and center hole of the record with a marker and pre aligned the sheet then fixed it with thin paper tape.

This time I selected a medium thick Polydor record (Boney-M Take the heat of me album) which was wraped in V-Funnel shape. Left this for a month period in a place where Direct sunlight falls from 2.00pm to 3:00pm. After one month just taken out the record and observed there is a marginal improvement on surface flatness. But information lable of the record fadeout and becomes almost white by direct sunlight.

Third time I chosen a Kapco International made Indu Music lable devotional record which was a mild wraped one. Followed the same as above and additionally used a small piece of news paper on the record lable area to prevent fadeout. Kept this setup in mild sunlight and checked the records after three months. The result is not satisfactory and in fact more or less no improvement. While playing the record observed heavy cone movement on speaker and this implies the record is deformed in wave shape.

So after almost six moth study my final conclusion is as below.

1. The warps in records are some form of deformation. Any warp removal process means that should be any type of shrinking process. The controlled shrinking process is complicated one.

2. The common methods what we are trying such as placing under sunlight is simple elongation process which will further deform the vinyl.

3. Two piece of 14 x 14 inch 8mm glass piece cost you around Rs.400. For this we may buy 4 common LPs. So this not a worthy for common albums and in my view simply waste of time and money.

4. We may try the above method on rare warpped albums and may get little flatness but not perfect. The final result will be little waved surface record. While playing I have observed up-down movement of Tonearm and oscillation of needle which leads heavy cone movements on speaker. If system having subsonic filter then speaker cone movement can be prevented.

Selvin, i applaud your patience in trying out the process mentioned. Will check my records for warps this weekend to ensure they have survived a few months of benign neglect. I guess the best way out is prevent them from getting warped in the first place.

what an amazing effort!!

firstly, thanks for this, looks like the phono/turntables section of our forum has been dead for about a week or so with almost nothing coming up. this article is refreshing!!

with warping, prevention is better than cure, also if you have a warped record, it may make sense to play it on a technics direct drive TT with S-tonearm (with a M44-7 cart) or just search for another copy :)

Hats off to you Selvin for your patience!

Even i have a few warped records but most of those warps are very mild (the tonearm hardly wobbles while playing). But recently i bought a very rare 90s record and that had a major edge-warp. I was of course very sad. The seller had not mentioned this to me. It was not affecting play but I was scared to see the cartridge go up/down like that.

So i decided to stuff more records into my rack (to make the records stay vertical more tightly) and i added this warped record among them. After almost a week (or maybe more) i removed the record and put it on the turntable and gave it a spin. I was very surprised at what i saw. The warp had reduced considerably! Almost by half! I seriously did not expect this to work so well. The cartridge was going up/down mildly now. Relief! :ohyeah:

I din't have the courage to try the glass method. But even I've heard that the glass method is not fool proof and lots of people have been dissatisfied after trying it.

Universal record stabilser rings, together with center weights can be very useful for playing warped records.

But to be perfectly honest, I like the idea of using the URSR more than actually using it. It is quite a chore to wait for the platter to stop spinning (especially on a belt drive that doesn't have braking), carefully remove the ring, remove record, place fresh record, place the ring, align carefully, then play. And despite a fairly heavy ring, the weight is not enough to properly flatten many warps.

Better buy a second copy. Or invest in a Vinyl Flat Vinyl Flat Home

Great effort there Selvin; unfortunate that the results are not upto satisfaction. I have tried keeping records under some pressure (big heavy books) for about 3-4 days and it worked to an extent. Extent: the record became playable at least. Previously, stylus was jumping around when playing the first track near the outer edges.

Also, for readers, I was fortunate enough to meet a gentleman from our forum on a fine evening a couple of days ago. We talked about our music tastes, record collections, tape decks, CDs, some technical aspects on different cartridges and our families. Also, we shared photographs of our set ups. And the gentleman, Mr. Selvin Jones was frank and honest about his opinion on everything. He shared the design of his DIY phonostage that he assembled for his friend. Hats off to you! Wish to see you again sometime soon.

Best Regards,
Saket

Thanks Saket..

Wonderful evening when we met each other .... Thank You... spent your valuable time with me...:)

Best Regards,

Great work, Whether its success or failure, its not matter.Your attempt and patience shows how passionate you are towards music and with Lp's.

I yet to start my journey awaiting wit some Lp's for TT.You believe it or not, am just taking off the LP out atleast thrice a day and checking whether there is any dust on them, are they place proper position.

At extent of all,I kept the LP near me while sleeping.By nature am very sentimental to my music and equipments which I own. I dont know how mad i would be after getting the tt.

I could say one thing for sure, My internet surfing time has been considerably reduced after the lp's Reached me.

No wonder you would some money or enough money to buy another LP.But your interest to take care and maintain is fabulous .

Yes Saket. While return to Bangalore visited Kolkatta and bought around 25 LP's. Unfortunately this time also one street vendor looted me during the absence of attention. I paid for a "Rock N Roll" LP along with few other LP's. In house after return opening wrapper the LP is not there.

Aboslute LP freak you are! Kolkata is good 400 kms from Ranchi and you traveled just for the LPs:clapping:

However, sad to know about the missing LP. Could have been an accident but if it is another way to make money out of nothing, then it's very bad.

Which other stuff did you get and what was the average price you paid this time?

Most are English Country albums and few Ghazals. Average price is Rs.100. For few titles / artist like Willie Nelson, Osibisa, Rock N Roll paid up to Rs.250.
Most vinyls are like brand new.... overall happy hunt...

Hello Audio Freek..

I am also a kind of you only... I had around 10 Ep's and 3 LP's without any turntable when I was 18 years old. Almost after 10 years only I bought a pre-owned turtable for those records ...
My warm wishes to you get a nice TT soon....

Lenin Sarani is my favorite place to hunt for vinyls for last few years. They are not like shops, but street vendors who would be selling the stuff on the footpath. The prices are reasonable there by today's standard and since there are a lot of such sellers in close vicinity to each other, finding specific titles is easy.

Kolkata seems a very nice place for Vinyl. Wish we had such places here in Bangalore apart from a couple of places whoz quality and pricing is horrible.

After all these years of Vinyl purchases, I've moved to acquiring only mint condition vinyl.

Yes RP, Kolkata is among the best places for hunting records. At times I think that it is better than I am not a Kolkata resident, else I would have kept spending my whole salary buying records only! BTW, I am off for Kolkata this weekend. Let's see if I get some time for visiting the vinyls sellers:)

Noticed that you are using a HMV-EMI Sonic Direct drive turntable. When I was a kid in standard 5 or 6, the EMI Sonic amp, speakers and turntable use to be something I used to admire whenever our school bus passed the shop. How is the performance. If possible, kindly post a picture. Thanks.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
