Nakamichi BX-300E volume issues

I recently bought this cassette deck at a yardsale. When testing it out everything works as it should except the volume. When I press play it sounds good for about 5 seconds then the sound disappeares. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if this is something I could fix myself. Any help would be appreciated.
