Hi Guys,

During a cleanup i was able to get 8 500Gb sata disks in working condition for a good price

with the help of forum i was able to build a HTPC system which as 2 sata slots

for the remaining 6 sata disks can you pls recommend how to use it effectively

i am looking to build a NAS server or it is worth upgrading your pc which as around 6 sata disk which
will act as HTPC and NAS server

budget it should not cross 15K

one more query

the power used by 1TB and having 2 500GB disk is same

Thanks

In my opinion 1 TB will consume similar power as a single 500 GB, since moving parts are more or less the same. With 6 sata disks I would say build a separate NAS server since there may be times when you will run night longs downloads on your NAS even 24/7 but at that time HTPC can remain off, which will be difficult if you club the tow and also your individual power supplies may be taxed unless you are already using a higher top ceiling for HTPC power supply

Hi Guys,

Can you pls give me some ideas on how to build a cheap nas server which supports 6 sata disks

Thanks

Why do you need it in the first place? Do you have any clients to play streaming content?

I use a NAS for audio. For movies and online content, HTPC makes a better option in my opinion.

With multiple hard disks you should go for a RAID setup too.

can the NAS servers be accessed directly as a large USB disk, keeping all benefits of raid, multiple disks etc, but eliminating the network?

No. They have to be accessed over the network, but they can be configured to behave like a computer's local hard disk.
