Not sure if this helps, but il share my experience. When i started on my stereo set up journey, used my mac with Tidal HIFI as source, sending digital signal to my portable amp dac for dac duties and used the dac/amps 'line out' to feed my marantz pm5005 amplifier. Using a tube buffer preamp (FX Audio Tube Pre MK-3 with JAN5654 tubes), im able to boost the signal slightly whilst adding some tubey goodness as well. Since the tube preamp has a headphone out, it also serves as a headphone listening space. For nearfield listening, its quite something.. Note that is also have used the portable dac-amps to feed my yammy avr and drive the 2 tower speakers.
When i added the dedicated multibit dac in the above chain, only diff was that the dac's sound signature improved the sound and dynamics, with most other aspects remaining similar/ unchanged to my ears. If you are on a budget, you can start as i did and then move up if you feel the need..
