Hi all Experts,

I want to buy a 40 inch LED TV. please suggest me a good LED TV

Below are my requirements:

Picture quality should be excellent

Sound quality should be excellent

My budget is around 65-75k

I will be mostly watching TV channels and Movies on it.

ex650 sony.....fits you
however for sound you have to invest sound system..no tvs sound is execeeelnt..
for daily soaps they are ok...not fit for theatre experience..
also explore plasmas...
cheap and best picture than its 150% priced led cousins anytime
they need some care to avoid ir problem...if you are open to take care..... save money and get better picture at the same time...
panasonic ut42 inch full hd at 57k.....also 50 incher xt semi hd at 58k...etc..

demo all and find what suits your eyes...check side by side led and plasma for hd star movies/movies now hd etc....

For the budget you mentioned, I would suggest that look at 40 inch models such as Sony EX650, Samsung 6 Series, Toshiba, Philips and LG LM6400.

If you are ever so keen to explore, for 75K you can get 50" models such as Panasonic 50UT50 or Samsung 51E550.

Know about pros and cons of LED as well as plasma and then decide. Just do not go on reviews/writings alone - have a close look. Do not get influenced by what people say (including me) - trust your instincts and the FORCE WILL BE WITH YOU.

Hi Just4Kix,

Thanks for your inputs. How is LGLM6400 compared to Sony EX650? Which one is better in terms of PQ. Also i have seen different threads on this site stating Plasma is better than LED in terms of PQ. Can you please comment on that

Is LG LM6400 better than Sony EX650? Only a side-by-side comparison can help. On paper there isn't much to go by and form a firm opinion. So my advice will be to visit multi-brand showrooms and check. Do not stick to large brands such as Reliance, Croma, etc. Do visit boutique shops also.

Plasma vs. LCD (LED)? I firmly believe that plasma is better for the same price range. But plasma must be cared like a pedegree pet - care must be taken to avoid image retention issue. The plasma also requires that the room ambient light must be low to avoid reflections. If that is done, then plasma will yield better blacks, better (natural) colours, no ghosting, more size for the money, etc.

Hi Just4kix,

I compared LGLM6400 with EX650 and found that EX650 is more brighter. Correct me if i am wrong. As i am a newbie, i don't understand much of the technicalities between 2 of them ( terms like MCI in LG and Motion flow in Sony). aslo its very confusing to differentiate the skin tones, the black and the natural colours amongst these 2 models.
I would request you to help me provide the exact difference between these 2 models and suggest me the model with best PQ.As i am investing so much money i want a TV with best PQ. Alos i have read LG uses IPS panels and Sony uses VA panels. does that makes actaul differnec in the PQ of these 2 models?

Since I have not done actual comparison of the two models, I cannot definitely say one way or other. As I said before, compare side by side and trust your instincts. Here is a list of some things to do while comparing:

  • As far as possible try to do a side-by-side comparison with the TVs as close as possible. If possible, ask the salesman to move the TVs closer to each other.
  • View the same source in TVs.
  • At home, standard definition (SD 480i) is what you will watch most. So do a comparison using the SD channels.
  • In showroom, the TV picture settings are set to high/vivid/dynamic. This is because showrooms are brightly lit. It is unlikely that you will watch TV at those settings at home. Take the remote in your own hands and change the setting to "Normal" or "Standard" or equivalent. Now compare again.
  • Once you are convinced on the SD pic quality (one being better than other), change to HD and compare again.
  • When comparing colours, check skin tones. That is the best method. Skins must appear as close to original as possible. A dark skinned person should not appear like an advertisement of any fairness cream.
  • Another way to confirm good colours is check the colour of grass and tree leaves. Grass/leaves should be natural, not bluish or yellowish.
  • If there is a Video Camera around (or you can take your own if you own one), hook it up to the TV and check the pictures for colour accuracy.
  • LG uses IPS panels while Sony uses VA panels. IPS panels yield better/wider angle of view but sacrifices on contrast. VA panels are exactly opposite. Imagine how the TV will be installed in your home and how seating will be. Look from various angles considering your intended sitting position at home. Check picture quality at various angles.
  • Ignore fancy features such as Smart TV, web browsing, etc. These are more or less useless.
  • 3D may be of some use if you intend to watch 3D stuff in future. If considering 3D, I will recommend passive 3D as used by LG. But note that you will use 3D for at more 5% of the time per year.

In pure terms, ST50 is quite ahead of UT50 in terms of PQ, features, etc. It is costlier also.

If your needs are limited to DTH/TV (including movies on TV) then 42UT50 is good enough for you - the cavaet being that you will be able to control ambient light and reflections. If you are going to watch true HD/1080p stuff via blu-ray, then ST50 can be considered. The problem is that Panasonic plasma TVs are in short supply. I suggest that you wait till Jan for the announcement whether Panasonic stays in the plasma market.

I Just checked it in mumbai.. i am getting it at 80K..One of the dealer told me that he spoke with Panasonic guys and they suggested to go with UT50 and not ST50 :(

Dealer is telling you UT50 probably because he has no stock of ST50 and can sell you UT50 instead. I could be wrong also and dealer may be genuinely thinking in your interest and came to the same conclusion that I did. Unless you are very critical and have a very keen eye, you will not be able to make out the difference between the fhd panel of both TVs; at least not with DTH as source.
