Hello,
This is my first post. I would like to buy a home theatre system(Without TV). I have some queries. My budget is INR 17,000
1. I have seen the Sony 5.1 Home Theatre System DAV DZ310 iCOD. What is your expert opinion about this one? I mean, I am not a geek. I know Sony sounds good. And it costs me around 16,000. Within this budget, is there any other branded ones, that you can suggest?
2.I am from Bangalore. Can I get a custom made one? In that case, where?
3. I have searched all the branded ones. Almost all of them come with a DVD/ Blu ray player. Can I get one without the player? I mean with just Amplifier?

Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Raghu, at the outset I would suggest you go through the large amount of information available on the forum. You will find most of your questions already answered. In any case let me provide some clarifications:

1. Home Theater (or HT) is a very generic term. At best it represents an A/V Receiver, a set of 5.1 or 71. spe1-inakers, a source such as a DVD or Blu-Ray player, a TV or screen, and/or a projector. In most cases these product are purchased individually and put together. When you setting things up, you need some expertise in terms of calibrating the sound and tweaking the display for high quality video. As you move into Blu-Ray, it gets more complicated. Home theater systems start around 2 odd lakhs and could go to a crore or more in value. Real HT systems could take a few days or more to set up.

2. Many companies such as Onkyo, Philips, Yamaha and others provide an easier option. This is called a Home Theater In A Box, or HTiB. Essentially this is like a 2-in-1. This usually is a source such as DVD player with an inbuilt multi channel amplifier. They also come packed with a small sub woofer as well as 5 satellite speakers. HTiB can be set up in a few hours and you could be enjoying our system.

The system you looked at are all HTiBs. Popular brands in this price range are Onkyo, Sony, Philips, LG, Yamaha etc.

And, no they cannot be custom made. I am quite sure you can get an HTiB without a player.

Cheers
