Hi HFV community!
I'm new to this forum, and was just browsing through various posts and found that this is a lovely and active community, immediately registered! Primarily I want your opinion on an issue I face:
I have an old Sony DAV DZ720 home theatre system (1000W) with 5 speakers, which was working fine until now, but as Murphy's Law has it, the amp just went dead one fine day.
We took it to the Sony service centre and they informed us that the motherboard is fried, alas!
I love the system, would frequently watch movies and listen to music on it, but not really use it for playing CD/DVDs.
What would you suggest? Get the amp repaired or buy an alternative Amplifier (or whatever other option you recommend)?
PS: I'm a noob in the audio system world, so please be kind enough to explain a little bit on your recommendation. 🙂

If the amplifier can be repaired at a cost that you consider reasonable then you can try. Usually sony makes good stuff, and their support should be good. So why not give it a try.

+1. These type of units normally referred as HTIB, made and tuned with matching components and difficult to match with any other Amp or system. The Amp is built into dvd player. If repair is not possble, you can look in used market to get same or similar make/model Player (excluding speakers) at reasonable price and go with the current setup.
Since this model is alreaady 15+ years old, the best alternate is to go with entire set of new generation 5.1 AVR+speakers OR 3.1/5.1 Sound bar system(like Sony HT-S40R, Sony HT-S20R) within the budget and matching with your audio/video preferences. This will ensure at least next 7-8 years life along with new add-on features like Blue tooth, network/streaming capability, USB, HDMI inputs etc....

Since your system is quite old , getting board would be challenging and they might ask Kidney for it. Try it once else start looking something which sounds close to your liking. You can dig through numerous pages here.

Welcome to HFV

Thanks Manohar. Unfortunately, the Sony service centre, after many days, said they cannot fix the amp.
In another local shop, the amp did start for a while when powered, but at home it refuses to turn on.
There's a Youtuber KD Electronics who does Sony amp repairs, I'll try to contact him.
Not sure what to do now.

Hi Mahaaprasad,
Thanks for the suggestions. Buying a new set of speakers is certainly an option, but not the preferred one.
If we do buy a new one, what to do with speakers of the older one? All 5 speakers and subwoofer work great!

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
