Need Inputs to Decide on 50" Plasma

Total Price - 75K. . . . This includes TV with Tata Sky HD Box (Not PVR) + 1 Glass + 1 Scratch card + Logitech Wireless Keyboard + 2Years Extended Warranty........Yesterday when i went there they were not sure about PVR or Normal HD box....but when i gone today for booking they said it will be with Normal HD box only and nothing can be done in this......I have spoken to croma manager also but he said that this is not possible......I also dont wanted to push hard for this and hence gone ahead and booked the TV.

Apart from this i am also eligible for 1000 cashback as a part of ICICI scheme....

So total cost of ownership is 74K....

Moreover, i have clearly told them that i will not accept demo piece and will only accept factory sealed box .........for which they said it will be fresh piece only .......i am also pretty sure abt this as in showroom display of this model was not available and only stock available is in their warehouse....still fingers crossed till the time delivery happens.

Thanks for the update and congrats on your new TV.
About demo piece its very difficult when it comes to chains of stores. They can pickup a demo piece from any other store/city! But if stocks were not available earlier and are available now there is very less chance its demo piece.

True amol.....demo piece can only be identified when the delivery happens and box is open in front of us.......

TV got installed yesterday......have watched HD & SD contents both.....HD is mindblowing......SD is not uo to the mark....but when connected it through my Onkyo...quality in SD also improved remarkably....
Overall I am loving it....
In the morning today i have checked the usage hours....its shows 3:59Minutes and 9 times it had been on/off......This is correct as i have used it for that much time from yesterday till today.....

Congratulations! Also, good to hear about the noticeable SD up-scaling from the Onkyo. Something I hope to be able to benefit from for Low res sources.

SD is not uo to the mark....

You've been warned already. ;) Use my settings I posted on owners thread to remove green/yellow hue in faces if you come accross.

but when connected it through my Onkyo...quality in SD also improved remarkably....

That is a news. How good is it? Are you talking about DTH content?
BTW, I forgot to mention.. Tata Sky HD comes with HDMI cable.

Overall I am loving it....

Thats great news.

Hi Blasto,

I will use your setting tonight......

Through Onkyo, the improvement is significant......Yes i am talking abt taka sky only....initially i have connected tata sky HD directly to TV.....and later on i have connected it thro my ONKYO and used the ARC hdmi port on tv...so that sound comes out from my HT setup......With this change i have noticed improvement in SD content....

Still, i can say that the SD content is not up to the mark....

Moreover, as of now i have made brightness, contrast & colour to less than 50% for thr breakin period....also, i have watching TV in zoom 3 mode so that bars can be avoided.

may be after this period when i change my settings the SD content also improves !!!!!???

Booked 50VT20 Today @ Croma......Will get the delivery tomorrow......Thanks to HFV....Especially to members......Blasto, aakashr, andre19, god2007,kevin23.....who helped me in making my decision.....

Congratulations!!!
perfect choice.............will never regret it.

More inputs.
LG does not look good in the dark. The panels are relatively bad. Very very glary screen. Don't go for this. (Or I would say don't FALL for this)

Hi Guys, sorry to revive an old thread. I am myself in the process of selecting a 50 inch plasma screen. I have reviewed the following:

Samsung 51D490D : Liked it but expensive for my budget. It is costing me Rs 65,000 here in Chandigarh.

LG 50PT560 Jazz : Is it as bad as said above? I loved the sound on this TV. Infact no other TV I reviewed of the three could come close in sound. Though not a priority as I would anyway be connecting external speakers with the TV. But I am getting this for a very decent price - Rs 47,000.

Panasonic 50X30D : Costs Rs 60,000. I didn't like the form factor.

Price wise, LG seems to be a very lucrative deal. I also liked the form factor of the screen. It had IPS panel - I don't know what that means :(

I will be using TV for only HD movies (720p, 1080p) downloaded from torrents via Asus O Play R1 player with occassional Dish TV (Airtel, no HD).

Also, I didn't understand the difference it would make if I buy HD Ready or Full HD TV? All the movies I download are a minimum of 720p.

Anything else you can suggest for a budget around 50K? Screen above 47 inches would do but 50 inches is preferred. Honestly, I am very new to this technology and don't understand what does what. What are the specs I should be looking out for? What things to keep in mind before putting down my money?

Please help! Thanks.

.

The prices quoted for samsung and panasonic are on the higher side.
The LG model you are talking about is plasma. IPS panel technology pertains to LCD panels not plasma panels. You were misled by the demos they are showing.

All models you are talking about are HD ready ones. 50 inch sets require about 15 ft viewing distance. Do you have such a large room and seating arrangements. Read other posts in this forum to learn about HD ready / full HD and viewing distances. with 50K it will be dificult to get full HD plasmas. Try hard bargaining for panasonic 50U30.

Generally LG plasmas has lowest ranking, even though many are finding it good. If you are interested in LG try 50 inch full HD models by increasing your budget.

My viewing distance is around 7 - 8 feet (max). Do you think 50 inch would be too much in 768p? I hope it doesn't pixelate. I am getting inclined towards Samsung 43D490 or 51D490. Do you think that's a good alternative? How much should this cost? Thanks.

I have a 50" with 8 ft viewing distance. It is absolutely looks great at 720p onwards. THX recommends a viewing distance of 5 ft for 50" at 1080p.

hi amit,

im happy you have decided to go for plasma and not LCD/LED!!! good choice.
with 12-14ft you can easily watch 1080p HD on a 65inch tv!!! looking at your budget, I would sincerely request you to stretch it a bit. The reason being I would like you to get one of the best 2D tv's in the market and the best 2D tv of 2010..............the Panasonic 50V20. you have to demo the tv to actually see how amazing it performs. There aren't many plasmas in the same price range that is comparable to this tv. If you have the budget blindly go for it.

Panasonic has revolutionized plasma technology with its neo pdp panels taking picture quality to another level. Unfortunately only V,S,G series come with this amazing panel. Which is why I would strongly recommend you to go with the V20 or any of the S.G series if you can source them.

If budget is a constraint then suggest to go with the samsung. They are a lot better than the pan entry level performers. Also, please demo any tv thoroughly you want to buy under low ambient lighting..............remember plasmas perform BEST under low light!!!

aakashr ,
I have a viewing distance of 9-11 ft and I intend to buy 50 inch plasma panasonic. Budget is not a constrain for this purchase for me. Which model of Panasonic plasma should I go for ? I get a price of Rs. 1.06 lac in Ahmedabad for Panasonic 50VT20 , but I am not sure if it is good price to go for.
In panasonic , Which is better series , VT or ST ?
Pl give your views
Thanks

VT is good but 1.06 Lac is daylight robbery.

Amit got it in Ahmedabad for 75k with freebies (From Croma). Contact him.

Hi Radni14,

If you prefer to watch with moderate lighting, 7-8 feet will be OK. But for more theater like experience, I prefer lower lighting and then distance of 8-12 feet makes it more comfortable.

For pricing in A'bad, I have already posted in VT20 owners forum. Incidently, I got 1 additional glasse, keyboard and Tata HD alongwith standard 3 years warranty and scratch card.

Keyboard may be difficult as offer was from Panasonic valid till Diwali. But you can always take a chance.
