I will be visiting US in the next and with the help of my friend ordered below NAS which i will be bringing back to India once i return in week after that.

ASUSTOR NAS 202TE

It has some neat features which are not available on Synology.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Got the NAS and it's up and running, sharing some of the pics of NAS.

I bought 3TB WD green drive from Flipkart but it was DOA , so had to get it replaced. After adding the replacement HDD NAS couldn't initialize , so i raised a SR to Asustor they connected to my NAS remotely and upgraded the NAS BIOS which resolved the issue :yahoo:

Had to say their technical team is very good and quick to respond :clapping:, they contacted me within 1 hour of raising the SR.

Congrats! A remote A.S.S. That's wonderful. Sure customers will be happy. One more reason for me to narrow down to NAS. great! Enjoy your setup.
Do they ship to India?

To start with below are some of the features which are not available on entry to mid level Synology NAS -

1) HDMI port (You can use this NAS as HTPC too)
2) 1.2 Ghz Dual Core Atom Processor (greatly increases NAS performance)
3) 1GB RAM (Synology has 512MB ram on their entry level NAS)
4) 2 USB 3.0 ports (Not available on Synology)

5) Infrared receiver built in for remote (Not available on Synology)
6) Asustor app store has all the important and more apps which are available on synology. (what is a use of this good hardware if don't have apps to use it :))
7) This NAS has hot swap bay (Synology doesn't have Hot Swap bay on their entry level NAS's or you can also say they don't qualify as Hot swap bay "ease of use")

So you get all these advantages at the same price of synology, that's how i got sold :).

for details please refer this link Asustor

Just to clarify above comparison was with only entry to mid level Synology NAS's.

mmm not quite as most of the "features" you mentioned are Hardware related and does not constitute as features, and come on..... infrared for remote is not something I would back upon a product... :)

none the less USB 3 is the only hardware addition I miss as such. Other wise there is no performance hit when it comes to single or dual core.

dont worry not here to bash :), I am techie and I love to poke, and I am also poking in to this Asustor NAS territory by reading a lot online, which I always do. It IS a nice NAS for what I have read till now. Will come up with an Actual feature difference.

And dont even start on app store, synology app store is one of the most comprehensive app store plus high 3rd part app availability ....

lastly Synology NAS DOES support HOT swapping even the basic DS213 ....:):)

No Bashing taken.. :)

When you get good hardware at same amount of money so that accounts to a good thing in my book.

I didn't say Asustor's app store is better than Synology. I researched and found that most of the software's one uses on NAS are available on Asustor app store thoes including Couchpotato, SABnzbd, Sickbeard which accounts as a 3rd party apps for Synology.

XBMC/Boxee is also available in Asustor app store which BTW is not available in Synology.

there is a difference between "good" and "enough", hardware on synology is top notch and ofcouse good enough (the j series) to run 4 HDD in any RAID config and that is what counts in my book .... :)

Couchpotato, SABnzbd, Sickbeard are available as third part apps and they works perfectly. Reason synology did not or might not have include them in official app store is coz all these apps instigate piracy, as their prime purpose is to be able to download using Usenet servers .... :), which officially usually becomes a no no for most products.

BUT as a third party apps, they work up to perfection.

XBMC is a stand alone product and is always advisable to run on a separate machine, (which is why we build an HTPC) and as we see in forums most of us do ....:)

What I meant was you have to open the box to replace HDD in synology, while that's not the case with Asustor it has front loading hot swap bay.

nope you dont have to open the box .... who said that. you just open the lid at the back and pull out the HDD, and this is for only for J series I am talking about, which is specifically meant for only Home users, the non J series and the + series and all above that have that front loading system .....:):)

I am happy with any NAS as long as it has all the apps what i need, and if i am getting better hardware at less price that's even better.

I am looking at Amazon store -

Synology (DS213) - $380
ASUSTOR (202-TE) - $260

That's $120 straight saving with better hardware than Synology. I agree with your "good" and "enough" point but what's wrong with getting better hardware at lesser price?

If you get Asustor and want to utilize it as a HTPC (which i am not using, as i already have a HTPC thanks to this wonderful forum :clapping:) that's a lot of saving too.

The non j series and + series NAS are even more costlier.

I cannot argue on the price , I agree, but you get what you pay and Synology is one of the premium HOME NAS company and is always at the top of almost all review online.

But that does not make Asustor a low ball ..... :)

In that sense the ReadyNAS 102 RN10200 is even more cheap than Asustor.
On Snapdeal its even more cheap :D

Netgear 102 has its own worth and value for money ... :)

Come on.. Software/Hardware and features on the Asustor are way better than Ready NAS. Again you get the same point that's too for $40 more :D. just kidding.

But your point is right, it may suite to some people who don't want to tinker too much on NAS side and don't care what software they have on their NAS's and want plain NAS storage.

I would also like to urge you to have detailed look at ASUSTOR NAS and come up with response in this thread, as you are one of the pioneers who got NAS knowledge to this forum. In fact I also got inspiration from your Synology NAS project.

This will help everybody as it is better to have more options to buy when you go shopping.

I will also try to post my experience with Asustor NAS here whenever i get time.

^^ Yes as I mentioned I am reading about this NAS as we discuses on this thread ... and for what I have read and inferred till now, ASUSTOR does seem a pretty good NAS, lots of features I didnt expect were there. So yes I will come up with a tiny comparison and post for all potential buyers looking to dive in to this Home NAS territory...:-)
