this is I saw in specification

what is height channels and external amplifier. and If I play any movie in my laptop is it will convert into Dolby Digital format.I think for playing movie in laptop I need to connect through HDMI cable right !.

Denon 1612 is basically a 5.1 AVR. It has 5 built-in amplifiers and a subwoofer pre-out. You need an active subwoofer (subwoofer with built in amplifier). The AVR also has pre-outs to make it 7.1 by adding an external stereo amp and two additional speakers. These two speakers can be configured either as front heights or surround back. So basically Dolby Prologic IIZ is intended for 7.1 sound.

To get real surround effect your movies should also have 5.1 audio. With two channel movies or mp3 songs you will get only virtual surround - you can hear sound through all the speakers, but it is not real surround sound. If you connect the laptop audio out, it will be stereo and you get only virtual surround. But you can enjoy true surround sound if your laptop has hdmi output.

My Laptop has HDMI port,so according to you if laptop has HDMI port ,stereo (mp3 format) songs can be play in surround sound(ie Dolby or DTS).am I right?sorry for posting so many msgs,I do not know these many things.by discussing with you I am understand some of things.

Stereo channels are converted to a virtual 5.1 by the avr. For connection to avr use the hdmi. It can carry both video and multichannel surround sound. DTS Neo6 and Dolby Prologic are the algorithms that convert the stereo to 5.1. This is not a true surround sound.

then what is the true surround sound?for getting true surround sound what I have to do?do I need to change AVR or do I need to do any thing in my laptop?I have only mp3 formats songs,I would like to hear those songs with surround sound.pls give me clarity .

do you heard marantz AVRs?how it is compare to denon 1612?my friend in uk so I can get marantz aroung 30k.if you know any good modal suggest me.

I have no experience with Marantz. But Marantz is said to be more musical than Denon. SR5005, SR5006 etc. are a few recommended models.
