Hi All,
This is my first post on the forum and I must say that I am impressed at the amount of knowledge shared via this forum.
I was only hearing music until the beginning of this year. It started one day with a feeling that I should be rather listening to it.

Off I started by buying a Sonodyne Amp SiA320R at the beginning of this year(that was practically the only brand I could think of) and was a disaster trying to fire my Mass market Philips speakers using a mass market made Philips CD player.

Then came along Hifivison that kick started the quest for that first true audio system.

After a lot of reading on CD players came across the Marantz CD 6003 as a highly reviwed player and was lucky to find one up for sale(from a forum member(FM)). Lapped it up and there on started my journey. It bought a little bit of life into the music but not a great deal.

Then began the search for a suitable amp & speakers. Must thank the same FM for guiding me right through out this. Ended up with a vintage amp - Sansui AU317 and what transformation it was. However the speakers were still a let down. I must however say the speakers paired with its complementing Philips DVDplayer with an in built amp its job quite well.
It had been about 3 months with the Marantz and Sansui AU317 and I hadn't been able to decide on speakers. Auditioned Wharfdales Diamond 10.6 & Tannoy Mrecury V4. I liked the wharfdales for the lows but the Tannoys were better with mids and highs.

The inner debate went on endlessly (I liked the Tannoys), at the same time searching for a used pair of speakers. Then comes that one day again when I came across a pair of vintage Sansui speakers - huge intimidating ones that I was sure would blow me away.

Decided on it and it has been about a month now. The first time I listened to them I was disappointed the way they sounded - just no bass(to be read as punch). But as time has progressed I have begun to appreciate them.

They have a sparkle - the highs are crisp and the mids are clear with just the right amount of heaviness. Started spinning some of my favourite records and they just bought that smile on my face. The lows are there just enogh to complete the spectrum of frquencies never hitting you.

I know there are stuff way superior to what I am listening to now but well these (MarantzCD6003+SansuiAU317/S 81U) are what I have heard so far.

The quest is on.

Thanks for reading this.Welcome any suggestions/feedbacks and most of all critics.

Welcome to HFV,always listen to your inner soul,V4 are good as you said for details, but were they new piece? Then Bass can improve later.

Thanks Spirovious and iaudio. Yes the V4 were fresh off the box. The first time it was played via the AVR and sub connected. It was sounded good.

There was a Marantz CD & amp combo on display, requested the dealer to connect to it since I already had Marantz CD.
That short 15min audition was convincing enough but bass was not as good as the Wharfdales.

This was about 2-3 months back.As days went by I was drawn towards the Tannoys. Also read about the highly rated DC6T reviewed by Whathifi.
At twice the price of V4 and no demo available I decided to hold on.

I came across quite a few ads for vintage speakers. S 81U was impressive considering its specs; 2- 10 inch Bass drivers, 1-4 inch Mid range and 1-3 inch tweeter.
The specs were the deciding factor. However the mid cones were replaced by the seller but still took the plunge.

The Sansui amp/speaker combo has been quite good so far. Clear, crisp and detailed. Sometimes I feel it is overly detailed. Again the issue persists with the punch not being there.
Having a sensitivity of 91db as I up the volume to 9'O'clock (I mean 1/4 the volume. Correct if I am wrong with the clock position) the bass comes on nice and tight with a warmish punch. At these volumes the highs and mids are way up the listening level. But at normal listening levels that is below the above position it has just the right amount of bass to give the mids there edge but never pronounced.
Instruments in the mid spectrum sound fantastic(atleast to my ears). The drums seem to now have a place, feel the strumming of the Guitar (Mark Knopfler) and listening to Adele has been revelaion.I can feel here voice as she finishes each note or atleast the speakers let me imagine that.
As I understand these floor standers are meant for large rooms. Up the volume and they will deliver it over a large area.
Talking to quite a few people on this issue and will experiment using a Graphic equalizer. I have come across a couple of them Sansui SE 500 and Yamaha - EQ 70.
Also considering a more powerful amp - something closer to the 100w or more.
Any suggestions on these or alternatives would be of great help.
All this has been pure experimental. The vintage gear just surprises me.

Hi
Welcome to the Forum. You have started your journey to the HI-FI audio . I m sure you will be having lot of experiences of older forum members. You can share/ ask/ any querry any time. Everyone will be eager to interact with you. And one thing as you said you are not satisfied with the Vintage Sansui Speakers. As far my knowledge Vintage Japanese Stuff is awsome like Amplifiers, Sperkers, Turntables, Tuners but not the Speakers. Japanese speakers are not as good as rest of audio equipments. British speakers are considered to be better option. ( This is my personal perception)
Thanks
Ashutosh

Thanks Ashutosh. The speakers are mixed bag to me for now. They sound good until I hear anything better.

Looking forward to continue my experiments.

Welcome to HFV.

Always buy what pleases you most. Read reviews, take advices but buy only after listening and if it satisfies you.

Vintage speakers are a great way to get good sound without burning a big hole in your pocket.

After a few misfires I have been fortunate so far and must thank a few people including Heliumflight who have been constatntly advising me.
The Marantz was acquired based on whathifi reveiws, Sansui amp on suggestion from heliumflight and Sansui speakers on based on its spec.
The speakers have been pure luck I must say.
