No 5.1 sound from HTPC via HDMI

Check your NVIDIA HD Audio Driver version. It should be at least 1.2.22.1. There were many bugs in the previous versions of HD Audio Driver.
(For checking, right click computer -> manage -> Device Manager -> sound, video and game controllers -> NVIDIA HighDefinition Audio -> properties -> Driver)

You can download the latest driver from here. This is display driver for windows 7, 32 bit, and HD Audio driver (version 1.3.18.0) comes integrated. NVIDIA DRIVERS 306.23WHQL[/QUOTE

drivers are already updated but it does not say NVIDIA HD Audio Driver.....it only says HD Audio drivers.......

abhijeet, you better post a screenshot of your audio devices and also your normal device manager (to see if any deviuce is still driverf less / left out). You take the screenshot by following the way I said i.e AVR first (no TV) and then HTPC (upto login screen / desktop) and finally TV on. Also go to your HTPC control panel and look for display monitors, see if a monitor named Yamaha is getting displayed.

If it is showing only HD Audio drivers, then most likely it is the default driver that came with windows 7, and it will show that it's upto date when tried to update.

You can confirm this by checking the driver version, and driver provider (whether it is microsoft, or some other) as I mentioned earlier.

To get it work, you need to download and install the nvidia drivers.

To take snapshot of windows use snipping tool from Start > All Programs > Accessories.

Just a suggestion - turn off ARC in TV. Restart your pc keeping avr on. Then check the audio properties again to see whether 5.1 speaker system is listed.

And verify that in device manager once you expand Sound and Audio devices you see the HD Audio and if you right click on it and select properties, in the driver tab the name of the manufacturer should be present, if it is Microsoft Corporation then best assured that what ausyz said is correct, windows is somehow clinging to default drivers. In order to chage that try uninstalling the device from device manager and then installing the new driver.

Your htpc and avr both are hdmi capable then only use hdmi or spdif cable or coaxial cable, only these cable will give u 5.1 sound rather then any analog 2 ch cable i.e 2 is to 1 audio cable.. Also took output from Grphics card via hdmi cable check if ur graphics card do support for audio also because some cards do not support. Then plug it into your avr.

Next set o pics...

The HD Audio Driver used is from Microsoft. You will not get 5.1/7.1 channel support using this drivers (this is the default one, that came with windows).

Here is what you have to do:

1. Disconnect both AVR-PC HDMI and TV-AVR HDMI cables.
2. Download and install the NVIDIA HD Audio drivers. (Provided link is old version, for latest one, please follow the link I provided earlier) NVIDIA DRIVERS 1.00.00.59WHQL
3. Restart machine
4. Connect AVR to HTPC and turn it ON. (with AVR to TV HDMI cable still disconnected) AVR will be detected as HDMI Audio Device. Check whether it is shown as Nvidia HD Audio or just HD Audio. It must read NVIDIA HD Audio device. Then configure the audio device as well as media player with options mentioned earlier by forum members.
5. Connect AVR - TV HDMI cable
6. Done!!
