Didnt know where to post this thread. Since my main aim is to watch VR movies, posting here.

I am considering buying a VR headset. Bought one of those cheap Phone VR headsets that required a phone and the experience was terrible.

so, want to try a standalone VR headset.

at 23K, it seems like the cheapest entry level VR headset which is any good.

Is it any good? Am I buying Windows 3.2?i.e. buying a thing which is still not fully ready for prime time?

also, is 23k the best price or there is a chance Amazon May drop the price during Christmas?

I have the Oculus Rift S and am very happy with it.

my biggest problem with the vr thing I tried previously was they Gave me a headache and they were a pain to use. The phone kept sliding from the vr thing. I wear glassses , so that complicated things.

i just am apprehensive about the comfort factor due to this previous experience of mine.
I understand oculus go is a stand-alone thing, so I am guessing it will be better comfort wise?

I've worked with most of the VR devices out there and can give you my 2 cents on them.

For just watching video content and some light games the Oculus Go is definitely the one to get. It's unlike the clunky previous-gen headsets. Hand controller tracking works well, the display is nice and crisp and is quite comfortable and portable too. And tbh there isn't much out there that has the ease of use of the Go. The new quest is definitely the one to get for an all-round experience but that would be way overkill for your use case.]

It's over-priced at 23k though. If you can source it from outside India you could probably get it for under 12k.

even i tried one of those el-cheapo things and it was blurry, plus gave headaches. but i would also get headaches with 3d glasses & sometimes even with watching HDR movies on tv in a completely dark room so was not sure if it was just me.

any experience with headaches?

is this a good time to enter VR or are some new better products on the anvil? i was thinking that maybe around the time the PS5 releases they may also release a upgraded PSVR & that would be a better time to give it a go. from the cheapo VR i tried it also felt that watching VR would take some getting used to.

Well it depends on each individual and how sensitive they are to motion sickness.

Honestly, VR is kinda dead future development and profitability wise for content and product developers. Oculus quest is the only thing that is selling well right now. Use cases now left are for Industries etc., Adoption seems to be moving towards MR and AR, where most of the money is right now, for the companies anyway.

Is the VR video worth it? People say once you experience VR, it's difficult to go back to 2D video. They say the experience is like you are THERE. Also, for normal 2D video viewing it is as if you are watching inside a cinema hall.

I'll get go if VR video is that transformative

I wouldn't say transformative.. just my opinion. Since you're in the NCR why don't you try out VR at one of the malls? They'll either have a vive or a rift and I'm sure they'll allow you to play around with it.

@generalxxxstark

OK, transformative was maybe too strong a word.

I am assuming you have used a go or something similar. Did you feel it was gimmicky or the experience worth it paying for?

im willing to spend the money, I just don’t want to end up feeling I bought something which was toyish.

I do have a Go. It's quite premium, build and experience-wise. If buying from amazon you could always return it if not satisfied, although I think you'll end up liking it.

Edit: I bought my uncle 2 Go's that he uses to show off designs for his Interior designing firm. Must say, he and his clients do like that experience.

i bit the bullet and ordered it. A bit overpriced at 23k but what the h@ll, you only live once.

buying it for the VR video experience as I’m not much of a gamer.

I guess I’ll return it if it turns out to be rubbish.

Any tips for getting started with it?

i don’t have a desktop PC but a raspberry pi 3.

so, I guess I can’t use skybox for streaming from server.

I guess I’ll try using Plex to stream vr videos from my pi Plex server.

On my Rift S, the experience certainly is not toyish. If you are looking at VR videos, there are not many around. VR video like Amaze Interactive movies, Inception Experience etc. have some good stuff. Give VR gaming a go. It's a great experience. Bigscreen is coming out with new experiences as well. Check that out too.

@ssf

Not a gamer. Not into it except for Nintendo stuff.

On private trackers like ptp there are 3d versions of movies like inception, etc.

I'll see if they are compatible with go when i get it this week.

Also, YouTube, Netflix have vr apps that apparently make the movie viewing look like you are in a cinema experience. Let's see how reality compares with their claims.

For cinema experience, you have to try Bigscreen. It has various rooms and the biggest cinema hall, the grand cinema has a screen of more than 100 feet. Yes that is feet, not inches.

was going through some reviews of the Go & few people were complaining about screen door effect which is apparently there even in the more expensive VR headsets, some even said the resolution was like watching 480p videos. is that true?

Nice. You'll need an Android/iPhone with the oculus companion app and a Facebook account to set up the device, maybe have that ready.

It's not as bad as seeing the individual pixels or the gaps themselves, that's just too far fetched.

Edit: I can take some close up clicks of the Display, if interested.

A friend got the Oculus GO for me last year during USA black friday sales, the price was 180 USD pus tax. So got it for 13k rupees. Now the price has gotten even lower to 150 plus tax but you need someone visiting USA to get this pricing of approx 10k rupees.

that'll be great if possible, else no issues.
