Oculus Go - Is it worth it

congrats. please give a review once you get it.

Got it 2 days ago.

initially, nothing worked. It seemed like a big mistake to buy it.

btw, you can’t return if once you open it. The seller had pasted a notice in front of the package that they will not accept return if the package was opened. It was weird considering amazon offers return on that item.

anyway, after the growing pains, I started to get the hang of it. I’ve started to enjoy it now.

The biggest frustration is YouTube vr is a little inflexible when one is lying horizontal on the bed. Apps like skybox allow you to put up the video anywhere you want but YouTube vr only allows horizontal movement of the video not vertical. maybe I am missing something.

When it works, the experience can be pretty fantastic! It’s like you are inside the video next to the people in the video. How you view that person changes entirely. It’s like you are transported right next to that surrounding and can see it up close and zoom around.

Now, having experienced it, I can’t go back from 3D to 2D. It’s like the first time you went from SD to HD Resolution displays. The difference in quality was so apparent.

Now, having experienced it, I wish the successor of Go, Quest was not so darned expensive. I would love to experience true 360 degree videos In Even higher resolutions.

The biggest drawback is lack of vr content. Apart from YouTube and some “educational” content, there isn’t much vr video. Also, the battery life is poor at 2-3 hours. I keep it plugged in to my battery pack all the time.

I think it’s a bit overpriced at 23k, but I still don’t regret buying it as now I can see that the future is probably a mix of VR and augmented reality.

I would be very surprised if in 5 years, mixed reality handsets don’t become mainstream.

wonder if vr will ever really take off? it may go way of 3d. still waiting for games like a spiderman where you can swing through buildings, or where you can fly. something like that would be a true game changer i think

is it blurry on edges or any screen door effect? how's the resolution - like 720p or better?

@filmguy

VR will only truly take off when the devices get more affordable, more comfortable, less bulky, something like spectacles or maybe contact lenses.

right now oculus go is still too bulky to use, has poor battery life, has limited functionality in it is only 180 degrees not 360, etc.

I think VR is Windows 3.2 right now. Just before the Big Bang of Windows 95 that put it mainstream.

Let’s not call it VR. Mixed Reality will be a better word. Combination of VR and something else, maybe AR. That will be when it goes mainstream. It eventually will, in an evolved form.

Having experienced a beta/alpha version if it, This is the FUTURE of media IMO.

There is some screen door effect, can be blurry sometimes. You then don’t notice it after a while. It also depends on video.

If I try to play a resolution higher than 4K, it stutters.

its good enough I guess though a higher resolution playback capability would be nice.

right now, my biggest gripe Is battery life, comfort factor, unable to watch YouTube properly while laying in bed.

When it works, it is great.
it’s a work in progress.

Go with realistic expectations, you won’t be too disappointed even at the overprice of 23K. :-

These are my observations. Others might differ.

Oculus Go 32/64GB is a 12k-15k INR entertainment device people, please do not overpay to resellers in India by paying 23-26k, just get some friends or family to get one from USA, available in every online stores and even malls there.

I got it for 13k last year and Oculus Go is a value for money device at this price point.
