Today,it rained slightly and I was watching a programme on my 14 inch BPL Tv at work place, just one thunder struck and Tv burst and went kaput:sad:
My point is I was just about to buy a 50C550 OR 47LD650 for diwali.Just imagine what would have happened if it was that TV.70k would have gone in the drain. So,the idea of buying an expensive TV is shelved and I should thank God for saving me some money.I would be watching Tv on the present rear projection42 samsung TV for now(it was switched off at that time). So,no diwali purchase.

I have been warning people for a long time to ensure there is proper earthing in their houses, AND, to disconnect their electrical appliances during a thunderstorm. If only you had listened.

Cheers

Are you sure it was thunder the thunder or may be some power surge ;) ? May be GOD told you my son it is enough that you move from CRT to plasma...

LOL@Kittu,no God said, dont waste money on big TV till the time arrives when thunder do not kill a TV!
It was only a very light rain and I never expected a thunder with lightning, just only one thunder struck and voila, the TV burst:indifferent14:
What is proper earthing of the house???please??

In electrical works, earthing or earthed means to connect electrical system to general mass of earth in such a manner as it ensures an immediate discharge of electrical energy without danger at all times. The earthing is helpful to enhance voltage. It saves human life from sudden electric shock. When proper earthing is done in building, it saves building of thunder effects i.e. from fall of natural cloud lighting In general earthing is not provided in building at the time of electrical fittings either due to ignorance/carelessness or to save expense on earthing. The earthing is most essential part of electric work which must be provided to protect from any mishap. The following are tips on implementation of earthing.

Earthing connection may be of either copper or galvanized iron.
Normally GI pipe or plate is used but copper pipe or plate should be used where the soil is corrosive.
Electric earthing may be either pipe or plate earthing.
Dry earth has more resistance whereas moist earth has less resistance.
Low earth resistance is required to give effective earthing protection to electrical fittings.
The location of earth pit should be such where the soil has reasonable chances of having moist.
If possible earth plates or pipes are located near water tap, water drain or rain water pipe.
Earth wire and earth plate must be of the same metal.
Charcoal and salt must be filled in the earth pit around earthing pipe or plate.

The position of the earth plate or pipe when fixed should be clear from all building foundations.
A masonry enclosure should be made over earth pit.
Entrance, pavement and roads are definitely avoided for locating earth pit.
Inside building in addition to all electrical appliances, all switch boxes; meter boxes etc. should be earthed also.

Thanks Kittu for the detailed explanation on earthing,it is very helpfull for even new building constructors,I never knew such things. The building is 25 years old and we will have to correct some thing I beleive
Sorry Mods for the double post, please excuse

Now get that done and buy a 105" TV ;) (latest)

A good electrician will be able to give you exact details.

First you decide the size and buy a earthing plate. Now dig a 30 feet hole with a diameter slightly larger than the earthing place. Fill the bottom with a mixture sand, coal, and wood powder. Make sure the pit and the mixture is wet. Connect a 1/4 of an inch thick copper plate that is say 1 to 1.5 inches wide. This plate must be long enough to reach from the bottom of the pit to your electrical junction box. Connect one end of the copper plate to the earthing plate and sink the plate into the pit. Cover at least 2 feet above the plate with the same mixture of sand, coal, and salt. Fill the rest of the hole with loose sand. Cover the hole in such a way that water can seep in. Some people lay a pipe and pour water through the pipe.

The other end of the copper plate can be terminated somewhere in you junction box. All electrical points must be three core with the green core all connected to the copper plate.

Though elaborate, this will ensure that all power surges and lightning bolts goes quickly to the ground.

Cheers

Dear Balabala,

The following company manufactures excellent earthing rods using this philosophy: The rod is filled with highly conductive material that gives permanent earthing even long after the earthing rod has corroded.

Really it lasts almost a lifetime..

Ashlok - Safe Earthing Electrodes..

Hope this enlightens you..

Yours,

Hi Kittu

IMO you are confusing between earthing and lightning arrester. The above function is that of lightning arrester.

In the given case, it is not clear what the TV was connected with but appears that it might be cable. Ideally, all cables coming from outside must be routed through GD tubes which will blow off in case of high voltages and protect your equipment. All landline telephones' sockets (supplied by BSNL) have it.

Hehe,Kittu, one bitten twice shy! or like in Tamil we say-nalla maatuku oru soodu!

Hey bala, If probability is to be believed, you will never get struck by thunder again in your lifetime. ;) Most people experience it never and atmost once in their lifetime. I have never heard of people experience thunder strike twice in a lifetime. :D

All said and done, coupling this incident with big things like 'God' and 'advice' is like what they say in tamil, "motta thalaikkum molangalukkum mudichu poduradhu" (tieing unrelated things together). To each his own.

God said, dont waste money on big TV till the time arrives when thunder do not kill a TV!

Which is never? :D
I wonder it could have been better if he said this to one each of the TVs when sony and samsung when they were opening an R&D centre. :D :D We could be having thunder resistant TVs by now. ;)

Worrld record -7 times!!:sad::sad::cool::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Roy Sullivan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roy Cleveland Sullivan (February 7, 1912 September 28, 1983) was a U.S. park ranger in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Between 1942 and 1977, Sullivan was hit by lightning on seven different occasions and survived all of them. For this reason, he gained a nickname "Human Lightning Conductor" or "Human Lightning Rod". Sullivan is recognized by Guinness World Records as the person struck by lightning more recorded times than any other human being. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 71 over an unrequited love.[1][2][3][4][5]

Our 21" CRT burst in a single lightning. That was years back when they had rooftop antennas only.

Lightening stike @ >1,000,000 Volts ..... so, if your TV is ON during the 'strike', it won't survive, no matter what precautions one takes. Best way is to switch off your TV during thunderstorms.

The arrestor would help if and only if the lightening strikes it, but in cases if it strikes the electrical cables or the TV cables, and your system is ON, then ...

The Lightning arrester is usually installed on the highest point of the building and the thunderbolt seeks just that. So, other things in its vicinity are almost 100% safe from the thunderbolt.

BTW are the GD tubes also available for TV cables? I'm sure they must be.

Switching off won't help a bit, u have to completely unplug BOTH the power plug as well as any cable/DTH/console cables going into the TV.Also, i have heard that wall mounted TVs still can take a hit even if unplugged if ur house was the direct target of the lightning, its THAT powerful.

Thanks Venkatcr and Subcnetre, your suggestions and guidance were valuable.
Yes,the TV was connected to cable and was on(so,if it was switched off would this have been prevented or is it necessary to disconnect electric connection from socket too?and does this apply to other electrical appliance too, because the fridge is running good)
Iam confused between lightning and thunder bearers!,are they both same??.Yesterday I beleive there was only a thunder and definitely the TV burst because of thunder(and not of lightening?)causethe sound of tv bursting and thunder were in unison and happened at the same time. The burst sound was scary because I thought it would burst in my face. There was no surge in power supply because the lights and fan were running at the same speed and there was no power cut too, which happens when ever there is rain.
Blasto, yes, most people do not experience the effects of thunder twice in lifetime because they do not survive the first one!.i always go by intuitions, beleive God is always there to warn you and in this case prevented an expenditure of 70k!
No worries about the burst TV,because our TN govt gives a free 14 inch TV!!!!!!
Thanks god that the thunder did not cause loss of life,it should have struck very close.
