One thunder and TV burst!

Switching off won't help a bit, u have to completely unplug BOTH the power plug as well as any cable/DTH/console cables going into the TV.

That's right. Our TV was switched off at the time of strike. There used to be so called "boosters" (signal boosters) one attached to the pipe just blow the rooftop antenna and one near the TV (usually kept on the TV to control the gain via a knob, when the picture is not right). The top one was burnt black and the one on the TV was burst open.

Agree with Imrahn completely. Recently my printer and CPU's motherboard got fried during an electrical storm even though both were switched off at the time. The wall socket they were connected to was also off but the damn thing was still plugged in so...... KABOOM

Even air becomes a 'moderate' conductor of electricity at the million volt mark. So, if the plugs or sockets are connected to the mains, then :yahoo:

Hi guys,latest update.
one more shower and the next machine to go kaput was the SAMSUNG washing machine,but this time it's at home and not at working place!.The mother board has infact melted and the cost of replacement as per the mechanic is Rs.2,500.We have one more GODREJ washing machine which was not connected but the mechanic said it would have cost only Rs.250 if it was Godrej.Now,I understand why one should buy Indian brands.
Iam getting anxious when ever it rains!!

Iam confused between lightning and thunder bearers!,are they both same??.Yesterday I beleive there was only a thunder and definitely the TV burst because of thunder(and not of lightening?)causethe sound of tv bursting and thunder were in unison and happened at the same time.

Thunder and lightning are created by a form of cloud called cumulonimbus. These are rain bearing clouds that can climb up to 20Km above our heads.

Lightning is an electrical discharge that occurs in a thunderstorm. When two large clouds banks come into contact, the static electricity stored inside the clouds come into contact with each other producing huge amounts of discharge. Large discharges invariably travel downwards to the earth. The static electricity is cerated by supercooled water droplets colliding with ice crystals near the freezing level.

Thunder is the noise that you hear when the electrical discharge takes place. It is, by itself, harmless excepting, maybe, to your ears. What creates all the havoc is the lightning as it carries millions of volts.

Capt Rajesh,I live in Villupuram district.I beleive that it was not me alone who have been affected!,since my home and workplace are a km away and mechines went kaput at both places at different times.Both the bulidings are independent ones and not a complex.

By the way,I felt Rs.2,500 was too much for a repair since the mechine itself cost only 10k before 3 years but my mother had already ordered.Our earlier washingmachine IFB went kaput after 5 years of usage and the same mechanic quoted 4k for the drum alone which I refused and I threw away the machine,so was the IFB microvave oven thrown away just for the lack of a small spare-rubber beading!
Here after only Indian brands for me,better both with availabilty of spares and their cost too.
