As a video media player, what are the short comings of oppo bdp 93? I can understand that it may not have best interface for music playing, but what are the blocker short comings if one wants to use it as a media player for movies only?
Are there any common formats that it can not play?
It does seem to support NTFS.

It does seem to support NTFS.

It doesn't play ISO files also it doesn't display cover arts, apart from that it's capable of playing any media file which is playable on a dedicated media player.

The Oppo is a Blu-Ray player. Dont expect it to have all the capabilities of a media player. It will have file format, file size, and media type shortcomings.

On the other hand, the Oppo 93 is actually a very good audio player.

Cheers

gobble, I think you have said the same thing on many threads, pls come up with something new :)

Venkat, thanks for your gyaan :) , but the question is aimed more at people who can give facts.
It supports NTFS, so file size should not be an issue. There will always be few thousand file formats not supported, but does it support most common "VIDEO" formats?

Ashish - I think it does play ISO, have you updated your firmware? Latest one was released on 13 July, so you may have not yet updated.

OPPO BDP-93 Blu-ray Disc Player

I have the latest firmware installed but then I haven't checked the additional features yet, if the links says so then it will read the image files. Then I would say that its a pretty much all rounder and plays almost any file format, and performs way better than any Media Player as well as a Blu Ray player with support for almost all known disk formats.

I suppose it does support most formats. Some that it doesnt support

Not Supported At All

Audio:
AIFF
ALAC
MLP (Recognized, but does not result in audio)

Picture:
BMP
MPO (Multi-Picture Output. aka 3D images)
TIF
SVG

Video:
FLV
RMVB

thanks. since I do not use hdd media much, need to understand from ppl. Are these video formats much used for movies?

It plays most of the common video files with no hiccups. Another plus point is that is decodes most audio formats too. It is not like plugging in the NTFS drive in the USB slot in the TV which says that the audio is not supported. Further most of the functions be it go to or zoom work perfectly. I think I will put up my WDTV for sale soon.

Hi, Just out of curiosity... how it compares to Dune HD max? any idea...Read recently that Dune is the most awarded hybrid bdp / media player. Thanks & Regards,

another fact is that the two hdmi outs are not equal. Only one of them has the great video processing oppo is known for.

For the kind of money the Oppo BD93 goes for, why don't you build a capable HTPC with a bluray drive? Will cost same or less and will have equal or better IQ.
