Oppo BDP-103D first impression

Guys I got my player from india itself through a store in mumbai. It is better of to get it from here as we get a one year warranty and region free. If anything goes wrong we can catch hold of the person we bought it from. If you buy it from the US and something goes wrong you will have to send it back to the US which will be very expensive. So i prefer buying from here itself.

Is he an authorized dealer? If not, even in that there is a risk as its upto the dealer ti decide if it needs replacement or not.

Also, lot many buy in US because it costs around 35k whereas here its around 75 to 80k, which almost higher than 2 players put together. So people take that risk, even if it fails, they can still buy one more player, and will still have money to spare!!!:) And Oppo's hardly fail, so its easier to take that risk

Sir. Even for me paying 75k was a big deal and also for everyone else here. But to let you know that its written 600USD for the 103D but you also have to take the extra costs which is shipping , Duty (35% on luxury products) Plus they do not give region free Kit which if you want to take the full advantage of a Bluray player,it is a must, which alone costs 8000-9000(plus shipping charges).Inclusive of all this it rounds up to 60-65k. Plus you will get a warranty from US incase anything goes wrong you have to ship it back to the US. I did all my homework on this and then i bought it.I also got some discount on as i bought a package a Home theatre system.I agree that there are least chances of the oppo failing but for the sake of 10-15k why take the risk, when you get a One year replacement warranty from the dealer you bought it from.So i am sorted for this time nothing has gone wrong yet Hopefully it won't go wrong too :D

For 103D, I paid ~700 USD. No duty since I carried it with me under 35000 duty free allowance. I purchase lot of electronics from US and I feel overall it makes quite cheaper, except for big or fragile stuff like TV or projectors.

But whatever suits you, I guess what is more important is to spend time enjoying such a nice player.

Enjoy!

Hi is your player region free?

I have question for folks purchased region free player either here or abroad.

Is it firmware unlocked or hardware? More importantly can you do firmware upgrade without loosing the region free capabilities.

Second, do you need to use key combination to change the region code for bluray? For me it is dimmer 3 times + mute + region code 1/2/3.

Thanks

Mine is hardware unlocked. Bombay electronics claims that you can do firmware upgrade without losing region free capability. After I got the player, it got upgraded to the latest firmware here. I have only region A and region free BDs so I have not yet tested its region free ability. However I have lot of Indian DVDs so I plan to check it out soon.

Yes, even my Oppo 105 purchased thru Mumbai dealer is h/w unlocked region-free and I could upgrade the firmware twice here. Even there was a key combination to change regions.

All those having Oppo 103, how do you find it's performance in 2 channel stereo? Do you use the analogue outs or digital outs while playing music? How would you rate it's internal DAC for music?

IMHO the Oppo Players are Overrated wrt their 2 Channel Stereo sound capabilities.

While I have not heard the Oppo 103, the earlier Oppos that I heard (which were rave reviewed by the press fro their sound) where VERY mediocre to my ears. A Rs 25K CD player would have been streets ahead.

Of course that's just me.

YMMV

I compared it with my Logitech squeezebox touch and its almost identical. May be my downstream components are not as good. I have both hooked to Norge amp with Polk floorstanders. It is good enough for me.

Thanks,

I wouldn't be so harsh on Oppo. One their plus points is that they pay a lot of attention to SQ. If they didn't meet a certain standard it would be hard to justify their higher price and they wouldn't sell so well. You can get almost identical PQ from a Blu-ray player costing 150$ to 250$ or so from any of the established brands. But these would definitely lag behind in sound. Granted the 103 may not measure up to a mid to high end CD player (105 probably would) but it can give them a run for their money. The 103 is definitely better than my old Marantz CD 50001 when played through analogue outs using its internal DAC (Cirrus Logic CS4382A). Oppo has claimed to improve the analogue sound by a new configuration of the DAC chip and adding a new analogue buffer and filter stage.
When used as a CD transport and connected to my Peachtree Decco amp which has a ESS Sabre 9018 DAC, it sounds a notch better, the sound becoming more open and lively.
103 is a good solution for those looking for a slightly higher end one box solution for movies and music. I for one am fairly happy with its 2 channel performance for now (until the upgrade bug bites!)
