Our theater room

Which 150 screen did you get it?

Fixed or motorized?

It's a fixed, acoustic transparent screen as I wanted speakers behind screen. I bought the screen material from Seymourav (centerstage xd) and built the frame myself.

Kurups,

It is rightly said that a data projector will be nowhere close to a projector designed mainly for movies therefore it will be wise to stay away as sooner then later you may loose interest in watching movies via data projector.

If there are budget issues then it is better to hold on till financials improve or alternatively take a second hand movie projector projector, there has been at least 3 offers in recent months at this forum for the used one's and i am assuming that they are in good condition.

Kurups, most home theater projectors have zoom capabilities which allow you to adjust the size of the image. Some more than others but I doubt any one of them is going to have too much difficulty projecting a 10 feet wide image from 18 feet.

But if you have a limited budget and go for the cheaper led projector (commonly known as data projectors), there's a good chance that you won't get any zoom option. For those you have to place them at a fixed distance to get a certain image size. Led PJs also won't be anywhere close to the HT PJs in terms of picture quality but still are good vfm due to lower initial cost and longer bulb life (upto 20000 hours compared to HT PJ's 3-4000 hours).

What's your budget for the PJ? If its 20-50k, you'll probably have to settle with a led PJ with no zoom and ceiling mount it somewhere in the middle of the room. If its closer to 100k, then you won't face any problems.

Hi Manoj,

Please share your view regarding Home Theater Projector selection. I have a budget of 1.0 lac and In India I am getting Epson 6100 within my budget. The projector has Contest Ratio 40000:1. What would be Ideal contrast ratio for a room size L-23',W-13' and Height 8.25 '?

Do 40000:1 ratio will make huge difference compared to projectors having contrast ratio 100000:1?

Please give your views on this matter. Also suggest some good Home theater available in India.

Regards,
Samrat.

Samrat,

Both of these nos are dynamic contrast. The ANSI contrast for both these projectors is less than 1000.

Having said that, the 8100 has much better optical lens (more sharp), bigger LCD chip and much better contrast + black level. This gives a much better picture + color, especially in low light scenes. Given its about 40000 more, I would suggest to save some more money and buy that. But hey, its money. I can understand if you want to stay in budget. You will not go wrong with 6100 either. It's just that 8100 is a better projector.

Hi Manoj,
Thank you for your reply. Presently 8100 is obsolete in Indian Market and have been replaced by 8200 which is around 2.15 lakh . There is no projector in between 6100 and 8200. One is having 40000: 1 and other is having 600000:1 contrast ratio.

I see many forum members are using PJ with 40000: 1 or less contrast ratio. I just wanted to know in my room size of 300 sq ft.. what will be the ideal pj? You may suggest what you are using presently. How is the pic quality? etc etc...

In my case the PJ will be in use in dark room so you may advise accordingly.

Regards,
Samrat

Samrat,

I am using the Epson 3010 which is 6000 in Indian Market. This was my first LCD projector so I did not want to spend more money. But knowing how good the Epson is, I won't mind spending more money getting the 8xxx series.

Anyway, the contrast is okay but the black levels on this projector are not that great compared to 5010/8000/8100/8200. The way I got around that is by making the room quite dark, reducing the reflected light. Reflected light washes out the image and makes it look less contrast. Also, my image is 150" diagonal, so that reduces brightness of the image (same lamp covering a big sq ft area) and it helps a little.

I think if this is your first projector, you will still be blown away. When you are ready to upgrade in 4~5 years, then you can look for another projector. But the Epson 6100 is still very good. I was recommending 8100 because it was available for Rs. 40000 more. But if the price difference is this huge, I think 6000/6100 will do very fine. Just cover the area near projector with velvet or non-reflecting black cloth.

Thanks a lot Manoj,

What about DLP Projectors? Lot of people have recommended this technology for Home use. I have no Idea on this gadget... Will it be ok in my size room..?

Pls share your views.

Regards,
Samrat

DLP projectors are also very good and will work fine in your room. The current DLP projectors in your budget are Benq 1070 and Optoma HD-25

Samrat, Promises Instruments opposite Kala Mandir on Theatre Road are Benq dealers. Why don't you have a demo? Even one Epson dealer, Embee is 5 minutes away, in the building just before the Audi dealership.

Ok G8... Do they keep DLP projectors? I have been to Epson.. they have only two PJ .. 6200 ( inr 1.24 lac) and 8200 ( 2.26 lac)... with a price gap more than One lakh... I have checked both of course I liked 8200.. Very rich colors and overall satisfaction.

How abt Benq.. any Idea?
