Hi,
I'm planning to upgrade my TV from a CRT. After doing some research and some reading on the forum I have decided on P42U30D. My budget is max 50K. I'm looking for 42" since my viewing distance is arnd 11'. Please suggest me if its worth buying also its availability/best deals in Chennai. I know V20D is the best but I guess its no more available :-(

Hi,
before taking the plunge also see the 43D450 and 43D490 samsungs.
They are HD displays, of course.
But one has 3D capability, and both have good reviews.
If you are atleast 8' away from TV, the FHD vs HD really does not matter at 42".
See both samsung and panasonic and make a decision.
finally its the picture quality, and not Specs. you need on a TV.:D

Samsung 4 series PQ was comparable with U30's PQ.
Subjectively, Black levels were better in Panasonic model. But samsung had an edge in video scaling.
Chroma stores and Hypercity stores carry this model, try to get a demo of both before deciding. Ask em to turn off the lights above the panels before checking them, as strong lights in the stores tend to cause wash out.

I got u30d 42" for 43.5k about 20 days back. I have absolutely no complaint against it as of now..still in breaking in phase..

Rajesh,
I bought Panasonic P42U30D 3 days back from Vasanth & Co, North USMAN road, T.Nagar for 43K (Inclusive of taxes, Installation and Stand). You can also try Vasanth & Co, opposite to t.Nagar bus terminus.

It is not playing 1080P movies mkv container(AVC videao and AAC audio). Plays 720P mkv files superbly. Plays files from 1TB HD drive and USB 32GB flash drive.
Has optical audio output as well as analog audio output. sound is not excellent. with Cable, SD is not good. Plays blueray rip through DVD player, super.
Has only options for Facebook ann shoutcast and does not have conenctions to Skype, Youtube. Yet to connect to home theater through Analog output.

Neo,
My TV is Plasma. The picture not being good was for Cable connection SD and not for DTH or HD TV Channels.

If you want to go for LCD then try out D580(has woofer-sound good).

^thanks for replying ya saw D580 too and it is definetly good but samsung has panel lottery system and 1yr warranty only while panasonic is giving ips alpha panel for sure with 3yrs warranty but playback wise i feel samsung is better than panasonic as you mentioned in your post, which is the only advantage i can see in samsung.
and i will use the lcd for gaming and someone told me that lag will be very less in ips panel compared to va panel is that correct?
moreover hearing lot of complains regarding 5 series lcd from samsung about display going kaput after 1.5yr nowdays.

I don't know where you got the story of samsung display failure after 1.5 years, its probably just a rumour.
Yes, panel lottery do exist in samsung.
But I would choose samsung VA panel to IPS (Panasonic, LG) panels any day due to better contrast performance and blacklevel.
if you are a movie buff, samsung VA panel is probably better for u.
besides, LCD's are secondary products for panasonic. plasma is their bread & butter.

^may be its just a rumor,as i heard from one fellow whose friend's samsung lcd display failed after 1.5yr and he had to get it replaced.
also how much is the contrast and blacklevel difference in va and ips panel is it huge or just marginal

hi Thirurajesh,

did u get a chance to check out Sammy along side pana plasma's?

Thanks,
VAN

Hi VAN,
I'm yet to check the U30D still. I saw Sammy490 50" in ezone. There are no plasma TVs in any of the show rooms in Adyar. I checked in Shah's and the sales person that Plasma is outdated technology and is used only for external displays :D . I will check it out in T.Nagar Vasanth showrooms

whether this difference in contrast level is substantial is for you to see and decide.
FYI, VA panels can easily reach blacklevel below 0.1 cd/sqm. where as IPS panels can reach only around 0.2 to 0.3 cd/sqm unless local dimming LED backlighting is used.
If your peak white level is around 200 cd/sqm., then the above blacklevel shall yield a contrast ratio of 1:2000 for VA and around 1:800 for IPS.

Thanks Gopi. My priority is mostly on PQ. I will be using TS HD and watch HD rip movies also I'm planning to purchase a Onkyo 3400/3300 HT.( This forum spoiled me:) )

Hi,
I finally got to see a 42U30D in Panasonic showroom T.Nagar. I tried with SD channels from Airtel DTH and the PQ was OK and I don't find a diff b/w Panasonic LCDs its almosts the same. When he played a Bluray the PQ was amazing. The price quoted was 47.4K. I also checked in Vasanth n Co, T Nagar, they had only 42X30 on display and will deliver U30 on order. The proce quoted was 43.4K without any nego.

I was able to see X30 and D490 in Reliance Digital. The PQ in X30 was good. But when a non 3D video was played in both the TV's I was able to see a clear blur in D490 something similar to looking at a 3d video without glasses. When I called the salesperson, he had no clue on that

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
