Panny P42V20D or Sony 40EX710 ??

I considered panny V20D seriously - the picture quality is very good.

The thing that influenced my decision was the power consumption of panny 42V20D (350W) vs Sony 46EX710 (115W) - my small contribution towards "go green".

I bought a 46Ex710 yesterday.

Congrats Anand on your purchase, Plasma's generally consume more power than lcd's as of now ;)

Also to point out 350w on v20 is when the set is displaying pure white screen with maximum brightness ..etc Under normal circumstances a properly calibrated 42 inch set will consume only about 160w or less, still its more than most lcd's

Could u plz tell me in detail about the settings u are talking about?

Instead of the picture setup menu, you have to first go into the Setup menu...there you will find ifscc option to be enabled...once you put that to on all the picture modes will get the advanced option where you can set the gamma and the RGB gain and RGB cutoff...also you will get two picture modes called professional 1 and 2 these are for ifsccc settings where you can set color with help of ifsccc filters and also the gamma and RGB gain and cutoff....but of course not all the store reps/or panasonic reps in india are qualified enough to understand these settings , forget about doing it for you :)

BTW the same TV being sold in europe has a infinite balck pro filter, instead of the infinite black filter in the TVs in Asia Pacific, which qualifies them to THX certification and THX mode...but here we get the True cinema mode which is as close to THX mode as can get. Just putting the TV in True Cinema mode is enough for most of the people, except for the videophiles

Well i myself havent been able to explore the EX710 to its full potential.

Settings have wide spectrum of choices, but till now i think the default settings are good enough and are justified.
Do switch to Theatre mode and edit the brightness a bit, although the sound in this mode is at its best.

And the best part is you cannot change the internal settings of sound in this mode,You can actually fiddle with the sound settings but you would find that the sound character in this particular mode has far more depth and character needless of the changes you make to the sound settings for this mode.

Well will keep on updating you more info.Take care till then.

Hi,

I too have bought a P42V20D a fortnight ago and I am in a big dilema now..
Its performance is fantastic and no second thoughts about it.

I am not able to enjoy its full potential as its only being used to watch the regular TV. I am now planning to connect an Onkyo 3300 to it and shift it to my room. Now the question is what to buy for the living room ?

Is it advisable to buy one more Plasma or I am more inclined towards the LCD ..Panasonic or Sony ? ( It will be used for ~ 8 to 10 hours daily )

It will be used only for the regular veiwing.. Your suggestions please.
My Budget would be around ~ 50K.

Regular TV broadcast i.e non HD and normal STB type broadcast looks horrible on displays above 32 inch. Even with a 32inch set you should be sitting at considerable distance of more than 8-9 feet to improve the viewing experience.

A regular 32inch LCD will suffice if you are planning to watch non-hd TV broadcast content.

Get the 40" Sony ex400(bought this a week ago for my sister and the pic quality is strictly average but good for the price paid buying from grey market) from grey market or a Samsung 5 series LCD with warranty.

If you want to buy a plasma for regular DTH viewing the get the Panasonic 42" X20 or a Samsung 4 series.

Out of the two i would say Plasma wins hands down for SD DTH but the only issue is IR or burn in of the DTH and Channel symbols.

@Many79: No offense to your comment, but I beg to differ - I have a SCV STB in Chennai and the picture is awesome even on SD content on my Sony 46EX710 at a viewing distance of just 5-6 feet.

If anyone you are in Chennai, you can sure come in and see it if you want to make a buying decision!

@tellanand : No offence taken at all, i was merely giving my opinion which i still will stand by. Watching pixelated stuff on a big screen is turn off, well atleast for me :D ...

I have not used SCV stb, not sure if its available here in Bangalore ... but on a practical note most regular DTH options available dont look so great on a big screen like yours. Neverthless i dont doubt its display quality since you have certified it ;).

Can you confrim what is the output format of your STB. Also 5-6 feet for a 46inch, isnt it advisable to increase the distance to reduce strain ?

I respect that. ;)

But trust me, it looks really good!!

I'm using a normal AV cable from my STB into my TV. I know I'm not viewing my TV at an ideal viewing distance right now. But I intend to move my TV into another room after I set up my HT - I'm hunting for speakers right now. Once that's done, the TV will move into another room, where the viewing distance will be about 10 ft or so.

Congratulations, Howmuch did you pay for this ? What is the best price that anyone received in bangalore for this model. :)

Kittu - I think I answered this in some other thread. I paid Rs.93K with Vasanth&Co in Chennai. Did you get connected with my BIL?

Yes Bala and I spoke on the phone today. We planned to get quotes from diff dealers for a 40" and 46" inch models and see which other dealer can better the price ... Thank you....
