Something thats always made me wonder,

What does one lose out on when one uses a pc cd rom to play music ( not going into the topics of soundcards ) in comparison to say a high end cdp / dvdp of 10-15k Rs.?

We loose better electronics purhaps.ie.DAC ,audiophile grade components.
CD rom- can be a better transport to get digital out and fed to ext DAC.

DVD rom cannot be used externally.

CorElement - the PC CD ROM/DVD ROM is pretty much useless as a reading device when you are comparing it with quality CD players. Constant reading and moving to and fro will destroy the head even with most commercial CD ROMS (PC). Plus the noise you get with a PC CD ROM is humongous.

If you want to use a PC for music or movies, it follows that you make use of the high read/write speed of the hard disk. Otherwise it will be a bit like using a Ferrari to drive within the (in)famous Renganathan street in Chennai! :)

DAC DAC DAC :ohyeah: If you can get a DVDROM/CDROM with a brilliant DAC then who needs expensive CDP's :clapping: So why would a DVDROM manufacturer put a good DAC in a equipment which will not use it, in a market where a different Rs.100 between your product and your competitors means total profit or total loss ?

Wouldnt the cd rom just read and relay the data to the soundcard?

in my case I have an nvidia nforce 2 mobo with soundstorm soundcard onboard that has a DAC on it and dolby digital live output via digital out sending discrete encoded signal to avr.

I read somewhere (I think in this forum itself) that computer cd/ dvd players have an spdif out - that can be fed directly to a dac - some modding may be needed though

CD rom has both, analoge & digital output & was need to connect on older MB with audio cable.

See a cable ,extream lt which has many connections.Next to red round in pic 2.
2 pin is digital out & 4 pin analoge.see image below ,1st 2 arrows (from left to right) are digital ,analoge respectively.

DVD rom cannot be used as external I suppose.

believe it can be modded to be used as an external one

believe that is your question - whether there is any difference in quality when read thorugh a cd-rom and standalone player..coz downstream you can have a dac to get the quality you need. read somewhere that standalone player reads in a continous manner while it isnt so in cd-rom...not sure whether that is a myth

Just in case you folks didn't know - the Meridian 808i which is arguably one of the best cd players in the world uses a dvd rom as its transport. Of course that is followed by a million billion transistors worth of jitter reduction :)
