First of all, I would like to thank our fellow forum member Saket for helping me out..
It so happened that I had purchased philips AF-729 from our forum member Mr. Kuruvila Jacob. It arrived yesterday but it had got damaged in transit.. One part was broken and its stylus too was broken...
Now I asked Saket for help and he was kind enough to give me his spare cartridge.. That too for free... And I repaired the TT and now it is working fine.. The sound quality is awesome..:yahoo:
I am sharing one video which i have uploaded on YouTube...

Congratulations Ashutosh Ji for the AF729. Very nice turntable Ashutosh Ji... I must say. I think the platter & tonearms are very well damped in this model. I don't have the audio playing in the youtube link (since I am at office), but curious to ask where are you sourcing your records from?

And please no need to thank for the cartridge. I have learnt a lot from this forum & received help from a lot of forum members; and in these small ways, I just try to pay my gratitude to the members. My own set up would not have been possible if such immense help, support & knowledge sharing was not available from Hifivision:)

Regards,
Saket

Srivastava,
I am so relieved to see that you could restore the damage in transit. Yes, it's a really good TT and very musical. One of the best Philips has made. I really liked the TT for it's robust built and good looks. Let me wish you all success in getting the records you like. Please send me the list of English records you wish to have. I have located the record you wanted

Hi kuruvila sir,
Well the sound of TT is really good, and for a newbi like me, I m really thankful that u gave me an exceptionally good TT.
BTW, what is the use of elliptical tracking dial??
The sound is a tad less on right speaker, what may be the problem...
As for records, please check for these..

Ashutoshji,

In my limited knowledge, the tracking dials may be for different kind of styli tips that you fit in the TT. There are spherical/ conical & elliptical styli tips. Try reading further on the internet on virtues of one over the other.

The difference in volumes of both channel could be due to reasons like incorrect anti-skating, problem in the pre-amp/ amp or even the speakers. May be the cartridge or stylus too.

Also, in case you haven't found it yet, here is the instruction manual for your turntable: http://sportsbil.com/other/Philips AF-729-b.pdf

There could be several reasons why both channels are not sounding equal. There are two transformers on both channels of a cart. Sometimes, one can get weak after using for some time after it was not used for a long time. This happens to many of the old Shure carts. It can also be due to many other factors like RCA cable, one channel weakness in phono stage etc. One can check by switching the cable from left to right and see if the problem is with cart. Regarding anti skating for elliptical or spherical, you can see the tip of the cart and see if it is a cone shape for spherical and pointed for elliptical.

The head shell of Philips AF-729 is not standard size and made for original Phllip cartridge.. Some carts like Ortofone OM 5 or OM 10 will be suitale for the tone arm

The wiring in Philips headshells (and cartridges) is different from the universal standard.
The 'live' signals are on one side, and the ground signals are on the other (if you look at the headshell internal pins face-on), as opposed to Top and Bottom for standard cartridges. If you put in a Non-Philips cartridge in any Philips TT, you'd have to re-orient the cartridge wires.

Where can I find headshells for straight tonearm...

Other head shells will not suit Philips. The head shell is designed for that player and I do not think you will find a better one for that player. You can always change the cartridge whenever you want using the same head shell.

But that's the problem, I am unable to decide which cartridge should I purchase, as one cartridge that I borrowed from saket didn't fit the headshell... Don't know what specifications should I look for in cartridge ...

The Ortofone cartridges should fit and also sound good on that arm. Try OM 5 which is not expensive and quite easily available. Many other shure carts alsso fit. i remember selling a similar player to some one with Shure 44-7 car. Only fitting it may be a little tricky. I am sure Saket should be able to help with that.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
