As far as
Sholay is concerned, even the DVD is not created from re-mastered material. It is a film to digital media transfer as-is. The copy shows artifacts such as scratches, film grain, low resolution, etc.
I have the
Director's Cut DVD that I purchased in UAE. It is some 30 minutes longer and shows the following main differences:
- The first fight sequence on the train when Jai & Veeru are introduced is significantly longer (sometimes to the point of boredom)
- The scene where Thakur's family is killed is slightly extended (but not too much)
- Many fight scenes are extended, such as the battle on the day of Holi
- Extended scene of Ahmed taking leave of his father Imam Saheb
- Added scene where Ahmed is tortured by Gabbar Singh and then killed (theatercial release only shows Ahmed captured and then shown dead riding the horse to the village)
- A small added scene where Ramlal is fixing nails on Thakur's shoes
- The last fight between Jai and the remaining bandits is extended
- And finally, Thakur fights Gabbar Singh and kills him
This is a real treat to watch apart from the artifacts. The running time is nearly 204 minutes.
The downside of the DVD are as follows:
- 4:3 format
- Artifacts resulting from direct film to digital transfer without remastering
- Film grain and sometimes washed out colours
I would love to get the remastered 2004 edition too.
