Pic Of your Blu ray Collection or Dvd Collection

Yes, Even still I have around 100 titles in my wishlist. Let see when I get them

me too. :(

don't worry money will flow but never offers like these :D
I guess no. They continue to give such nice offers which too tempting and hard to resist.
I marked some 999 titles have been increased to 1299. In this case, 40-50% discount wont matter any more. What they should do now is to lower the price instead so that more folks will opt for buying not pirating.

:) I was audio freak too, Sold my around 400 ACDs 2 years back and still have 400 ACDs. Also have around 200 DVDs, 100 VCDs and now Blu-Rays

Sometimes my family says I have wasted my lot of money on these things and sometimes (not always) I also think it is true but still I am doing it. :D

when U will have bought those 100 titles, your wishlist will have 200 more titles by that time.

It had happened to me when I was an audio CD freak.

he he...i gave away(got rid of) my VCDs. Keeping DVDs only. Only Old movies though.

Well, about the new people being caught by Bluray bug, I have something to say...not a suggestion, but just my opinion and I follow this approach personally.

- I don't get lured by offers all the time, no matter how cheap an item become... Buy only those Bluray which I think I'll prefer to watch them at a later stage, and shall not be a one time watch stuff....for such one time movies...there are other means available ;-)
This is an strict approach of mine. You make good stuff, I'll try it and if I like it...I'll buy it too!!

For example: If you have watched a movie in theater, then you have paid the money to the producers in a way. Now if you liked the movie or you wanna watch it a later stage or you really appreciate the movie, then one can buy its DVD/Bluray.

- But if there is a movie, you watched in a theater and you liked it...but you think you'll never prefer to watch this again..then there is no point in wasting money on such movies again.
For example: I watched 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' in theater and I liked the movie. However, I'll not prefer to watch this movie again by my own wish. Because this was a one-time stuff for me. Movie was good, but over-dramatic and I feel if it was an official biography, it should have been made without adding any over-dramatic commercial stuff. No matter how good this movie is, I won't prefer to pay for this movie again.

- Apart from movies, I have spent lot of money on buying Bluray discs of TV shows. Initially I bought shows like 'Lost' and 'Prison Break' blindly, but it was based on an assumption that if bunch of people rated these shows very high, then I'll certainly like them and it proved correct, as I'm not much of a choosy guy which may contradict a mass opinion when it comes to movies and TV shows. I feel lucky that I have watched these shows in their best version on Bluray.
Later I have bought many other TV shows either by trying initial episodes or just by going through high IMDB ratings.

- I bought Bluray of Dhoom-2 at a shop where it was offered at Rs. 299. Now I think why I bought...I think I'm never gonna watch Dhoom 2!!

Hope this helps some people who are newly infected the Bluray bug :-)

Thanks a ton for the insight, technobhatt. It helped a lot.

Initially I am getting lured by offers because I have been just bitten by the collector bug. It will pass away with days, I guess. However, I have set some principles similar to the above.

I buy
- Only those with REWATCH value. I enjoy Dramas, Rom-Com, Comedies watchable again and again
- No Suspense/Thriller -specially with twist ending. IE. Se7en, 6th Sense. I loved them but not worth enjoying 2nd time onwards
- No Horror movies - They are always 'wow' me first time but not again and again
- Selected Super Hero/Action-Adventure Movies which I first watch by other means then decide whether to keep it for later viewing
- No Bollywood movies in BD. If I love, I get a DVD. Of course if they will sell @ 200-300, I will prefer BD.

I love to have TV shows in BD which I like, like the Bigbang, Friends but haven't purchased them yet. Very costly for me now.

Agree, I have also thought to follow these policies. I don't want to pay twice to the producer :D
-So if I like any movie and want to watch it, instead of watching movie in theatre I prefer to buy Blu-Ray (even released later), in this way I spent the same amount on BD but can watch with whole family/any time/with friends/more than once if deserves.

Very sound principles mentioned above and I follow them in the same manner. Have not purchased any BD in the last three months because the fall of rupee meant BD price jumped to Rs. 1000+ on an average (even with free shipping on Amazon.com). One thing I realized, and perhaps you may also feel, is, once the collection crosses 75 or so, even those BDs that you think you will watch again and again, may not happen.

Good advice and also makes a lot of sense. One also needs to keep in mind that nothing is permanent... not even Blu-ray as the high definition format... soon it will be replaced by something better and our collection will start all over again. I have been through this cycle many times for video. I had a 3-VCD player and a collection of VCDs. Then I bought a home theater and nothing other than DTS sounded good so I ended up getting DVDs for all the movies and giving away the VCDs. Then came HD and I've been spending a mini fortune on replacing the DVDs with Blu-rays. I have not started giving away the DVDs (yet) but only because of the time and money I spent "lovingly" collecting them... but truth be told they are not watchable on my Plasma or the home theater setup. Very soon Blu-ray will be replaced by 4K or something better that offers more high definition clarity and the cycle will start all over again.

Music though has remained the same... the high definition formats are very limited and also don't carry most of the popular artists (at least those I listen to). I have been buying CDs since I was in school and have built up a sizeable collection that is still in use today. Of course I don't use a CD player anymore and have moved my collection to the PC (FLAC rips) but at least the actual CDs are in use and will come in handy in case of a crash and I lose the data on my PC and the external HDD backups.

Just my 2 cents on investing a ton of hard earned money on something that offers little replay value. A library membership to a Blu-ray rental service makes more sense... I have one of those and get to watch most movies on rental and I actually only end up buying those with a high replay value or complete series like Harry Potter, Iron Man, LOTR, Bourne trilogy, Lost, etc.

Yeah, 4K seems to the next big thing, but I think Bluray is the end of line for me!! I'm just convincing myself though ;)

I don't foresee 4K becoming the mainstream for next 10 year or so... At least not for people like me, who think I may not be able to buy a house big enough to do justice to 4K viewing at home. I think I won't consider buying a 4K TV unless they stops the production of 1080p TVs/projectors, to force people to buy 4K.
Also, there are many old titles which may never appear in original 4K transfer or 4K transfer may not be good enough or may be upscaled version in 4K would be good enough for such titles.
And I don't think there can be anything more 'Lossless' than current 'lossless' formats as far as further invention in Audio Codecs is concerned.

Definitely, even I don't think I would go for 4K, Blu-Ray quality is really satisfactory and as you already mentioned 10 years or more for 4K; definitely we will not consider to replace our BD collection and create new 4K collection from scratch. After 10 years or so we will have many other responsibilities to fulfill (at least for me).

One never knows till the things actually stares back at you. People thought the LD (laser disc) was the ultimate experience. Then DVDs were loved all over. Now is the age of BD. Two years from now - BD4. And then who knows what?

Only one should know where to stop. :p

We are just kidding ourselves. Being in this hobby we are sure to upgrade... otherwise we would not even be on this forum.

BTW 4K might already be here... the other day I visited Reliance Digital where they had a 4K TV on display and the salesperson told me they had sold 2 TVs already and that too priced at 25 lac a piece. If people in Hyderabad are buying 4K TVs at those prices I'm sure more upmarket cities like Mumbai will only be ahead.

Of course at those prices it will be a niche product for a while... but I'm sure prices will come down eventually and even the TV manufacturers will push things along by killing off present day 1080 technologies and forcing an upgrade. Most of my LCD and Plasma purchases were because of the non-availability of CRT TVs locally... so I ended up getting 32" LCDs for my mother and mother in law. Most of the content they watch (regional channels) is still SD and the only HD content both joined me for was Avatar.

Even now, I sometime buy DVDs for those one time view kind of movies (if cheap) else go for download. I buy blu rays for only those movies, which are repeat worthy (for me). Otherwise, I have almost already stopped buying BDs just for the hack of it. I think for me even DVD quality is good enough, though not ultimate, still satisfying for majority of the movies. And for those chalta type movies, better option is to download, watch and delete, if cheaper DVDs are not available. In fact I have some BDs which I have not even watched once after buying like MI-quadrology, SpiderMan-Trilogy etc. But I know, I will watch them sooner or later, and I like to watch them over and over again. Batman Trilogy though I watched once or twice, but I will do it many times more in the near future. Bought few BDs, because it was too cheap to ignore, so I bought them (like Pirates of the Carribean series), prometheus, Skyfall (still in packed condition).

I have purchased lot of BDs these days, already watched many of them but lot of stuff still to watch. Around 4 months stuff if I watch one movie daily. Thinking to stop buying BDs for sometime.

Finally with much confusion made peace with LOTR Stelbook
