Any opinion on Pioneers BDP 440 ?

Is Pioneer BDP 440 sold in India region free for blu ray / dvd out of the box ?

There are conflicting reports in the net & would be great if any actual user can confirm it.

thx in advance.

The 440 is a decent player. It can be made region free for DVD, but needs a hardware modification for being made region free for Blu-ray. That is common for ALL Blu-ray players.

Cheers

I am also in the same boat and looking for a UD player under 30k. was searching for pioneer lx55 but it seems pioneer. India only has bdp440
It would be great if pioneer users can share their opinion.
For now only pioneer bdp440 looks like an option under 30k

Sumeet claims here it is region free.

WANTED - Best 3D Blu Ray Player.....

Thanks all. I see that there are many like me tracking this bdp 440.

@ kittu - can you share dealers contact details / price ?

If it really is blu ray region free , I will buy it immediately. Hope sumeet or others confirm the same.

as there are 3 of us interested now , how about a group buy ?

Pioneer BDP 440 is not a region free player for Blu Rays unless and until a H/W kit is installed just like Oppo, and you can check it out by playing a different region Blu Ray. None of the players except Dune HD Max is region free without the Hardware Mod Kit. Onida was selling region free players and its region could be changed through its remote but the same has been disabled after the firmware upgrade. This is not possible without the Kit due to the reason that these Blu Ray players need firmware updates to Play New Blu Ray disks which have been mastered using the newer version of Java and unless and until you won't upgrade your player's firmware, it won't be able to play that new Blu Ray disk. So in case somebody has come up with a software hack to make it region free for both Blu Ray as well as DVDs gets wiped out after the firmware upgrade.

WANTED - Best 3D Blu Ray Player.....

This is completely incorrect. Summet, in his eagerness, seems to have misread what is written in the manual. In page nine, it just lists the region coding for Blu-ray and DVD, and clearly says the following:

1. Blu-ray players are assigned region codes according to region in which they are sold.
2. Disc not including these numbers cannot be played on this player.

He has conveniently misread these two lines. He will be able to play a large number of Blu-ray discs as many of them would be region free. But I do have a few region encoded discs that do not play on the 440.

Cheers

yeah.. the player has a region code and play only for that region encoded discs or all or all region disks. downloaded the manual and read the part again (image attached). looks like the the word "models" in italics were strangely not there in the part of manual quoted by him.
it seems the player can only play the region specific and all region discs..

still would like to go with it as I could not find any other option in under 30K price range..
any suggestions..??

@ venkat, as you have been using this player , how would you rate its Audio capabilities ? The idea is to buy this as a universal disc player instead of buying a dedicated Cd Player + a blue ray player., if it has decent audio performance.

Is the audio output comparable to likes of standalone denon / nad CDPs ?

The 440 is optimised for video, not for audio. It will fare well with music as compared to most budgetary CDPs. But of you compare it to specialised CDPs, it may not fare well.

If you have a amplifier that can take digital in or a decent DAC, then of course it will work very well. One such option is the rLink from Arcam that has all the capabilities of rDAC without the cost.

Cheers

thank you. this will be connected through HDMI to my denon AV receiver. Both Audio & video will be routed through this hdmi.

@ others, who are also looking for same model, lets use this thread to track prices / offers on this model. Do post the best price you have seen for this model , so that all can benefit.

thx.

( Ht store bangalores asking price , when enquired on phone - Rs. 19,900 )

The Pioneer BDP-440 at 20K (or even 17-18K) and locked to Region C is a waste of money, especially if the sole purpose is playing BD/DVD - or at least this is my opinion. Order two decent Sony or Panasonic players - one Region A from Amazon.com and one Region B from Amazon.de. Region C is insignificant.

If music/DAC/480p->1080p is desired, then buy an Oppo BD-93 instead and make it region free. Will cost around 45k.

it plays mkv From ntfs drive, has a remote app for android still has edge over sony and panasonic.
How about pioneer with some DAC under 30k? What options are available.

Where can i get oppo in delhi??
