All depends what you exactly want.
Do you need a console which will act as a dvd/blu ray player plus playability via usb? or
Are you very budget conscious and want just a pure gaming console?
You have primarily three options - Wii, PS3 and Xbox360
As musicbee and arnprasad mentioned, Wii is a good gaming console option, and more user friendly too for folks of all age groups, your wife, kid etc. But the graphics is not as surreal as Ps3 & XBox. You have quite number of game titles such as tennis etc and with this wii remote it mimics the Ps3 move.
Now as far as PS3 v/s Xbox is concerned, you will need to ask yourself the questions I raised above. Both Xbox and Ps3 have got their equivalent fan following, both have good bestseller games, with excellent graphics, but somehow my opinion is the number of Ps3 titles slightly outnumber those of XBox.
I had demoed the Ps3 and xbox before taking finaly plunge. I personnaly felt I need to hold something in my hand to simulate experience of moving a racquet or using golf stick etc.. which is not same as in Xbox kinect - where you dont need to hold anything in the hand.
My second trigger was to use it a multifunctional device - blu ray/dvd player with USB. Here also the Ps3 fit the bill.
These two major factors made me turn towards Ps3. I'm currently using it in my living room and enjoying watching movies/listening to music via usb stick/ hard drive as well.
