Planning to buy Sony KDL-40EX650

Unless you opt for a 3d TV, go for the EX650. The other features like NTFS , video format compatibility can be attached by going for a media player, which i think would be much better than the inbuilt decoding features offered by other brands (like samsung ).

So if you are ready to compromise picture quality for video format compatibility then its your choice.

Hi

can u pls tell us exactly how the media player will be used in order to play NTFS files mkv,dts etc ? also which media players are good in the market and their availability . I need to watch some HD movies on EX430.

Thanks.

Jst bought the tv down from Bangkok last week. 40" EX650. Fantastic for its price, great picture & sound quality.

Had a linksys dongle back home but its not compatible so will get that & comment on the net functions.

Whats the price you paid for this one? I am looking for a 46 or a next bigger screen size..

Did you compare any other brands for price and features??

Ash

From personal experience stay away from LG in India. If not looking for 3d the EX 650 is a real good buy.
Excellent sound & picture quality. I got it down from Bangkok last week for 35500 + 3000 customs duty (he insisted on valuing it at 45000).
There is an international warranty too with the product, but again from past experience (I have a 46' sony lcd & 46" HX750) nothing goes wrong with a sony.

The HX750 46" was costing approx 72000 inclusive of a 3d blu ray player 190 & hdmi cable & glasses in power buy bkk, last week

Hi All,
Finally bought 40EX650. Now with me in Kuwait. Will be bringing it home next week.
Can any body suggest some very good picture settings for the model?
Also I bought a Iomega MX2 Screenplay HD Media Player. When I tried playing HD movies, it appeared as like cinemascope on the screen. The aspect ratio was 16:9 in the HD Media player, but the picture was not a full screen. Is there any settings available on the TV? Kindly let me know.
Thanks.

The aspect ratio depends on the movie source. I have tried original 1080p full blu-ray rip of Harry Potter, but it is not full screen in my TV. There are options to fill the screen, but that will distort the image and I prefer to watch the movies as such.

Threr is a Wide Mode button on remote(sign like two bi-directional arrow at 90 degree)..click on it..Select the full mode..picture will appear full screen.

When you play the video, does the image appear to be squashed (people appearing fat)? If yes, then there is a seeing issue. If no, then everything is alright and appears as it should. Baiju above is right in assessment.

I posted this info on another thread. But here is how customs duty is calculated:

a) Customs will accept your invoice price if it is from a well known reputed shop; else it will use its own valuation (from their so called blue-book).
b) If your valuation is accepted then the landed price of the TV is 1.1 times your invoice price. 10% is added as CIF. If they use their own value, then that value is the landed price.
c) For all countries other than China, Burma/Myanamar, Nepal, and Bhutan, when the stay abroad is more than 3 days (3 days of actual stay in the foreign country and not based on departure/arrival dates), you get a baggage duty exemption of 35,000 per person.
d) Baggage duty for the family is not clubbed.

- Now assuming that your TV cost equivalent of Rs. 42,000 abroad and this value is accepted then CIF value is Rs. 46200.
- After exemption, the customs assessible value is Rs. 11,200
- Basic Duty rate is 35% and 3% educate cess on basic duty; hence your basic duty Rs. 3,920 and edu. cess is Rs. 117.60
- so you will have to pay Rs. 4,037.60 as duty

HTH.

720 INR is not too much. The TV is available at Carrefour in Avenues for 200 KD and they are giving away the wireless dongle free along with it. Hopefully I will bring it back next month. Thanks for the update.

Thanks for the above calculation mate. As per the current exchange rates, the TV will cost me around 38 k and as per the calculation you provided it will cost around 2400 including the duty and education cess. I wonder what would be their price if in case they calculate duty as per that. Any ideas about what pricing do they use?

The customs pricing is not way off the standard rates in Singapore/Dubai/etc. - marginally higher I would say. As long you can show a proper computerized receipt from a well known shop/establishment, the customs are OK with that. Customs will not accept hand written receipts, even from reputed shops.
