Hi All,

Iam planning to Purchase AV Receiver hopefully Denon or Yamaha, i have a doubt that does it work in India or we need to use a converter to change it to 220V or will there be any switch on receiver to change it to 120v to 220v. Also will there be any problem in checkin or checkout in airport if we carry it. Need your Suggestions on this. Please help.....

Dont buy from USA ,due to voltage difference in the long run the Converters dont work.

a big gamble.

Don't hesitate to buy. I've had an Onkyo AVR and now a Marantz prepro both working with stepdown transformers for many years both work fine even now. I've carried both in my check in baggage from the US.

If you are getting very good deal compared to India, you should surely go ahead with the purchase. Step transformer will take care of voltage rating difference. You can also find units which can work on 110V - 220V but that will cost premium.

But do keep in mind that your unit wont be covered with warranty in India. Incase of malfunctioning you require to send your unit back to US for replacement or repair. You can also get it repaired on India but need to pay for it.

Regarding customs at Airport, yes you require to pay duties if you declare it. You can get it with your check-in baggage and declare as used item to avoid any duties. But then you need to make sure that it shouldn't be shown as brand new unit in front of officials.

I am using a US purchased Denon 110v AVR (with maxine stepdown) since 3.5 years without problem. So if you get a good deal do not hesitate just due to voltage.
About customs, AFAIK you can get items worth 45k INR without paying any duty, beyond that you have to pay 36% of the (additional value beyond 45k) which still works out cheap as prices in India are just exorbitant.

Buy a top of the line used AVR from the US at a good price so that even to customs you can say it is used.

I mean a total AVR like Rishiguru mentions. Then buy one pre processor which you can keep changing as DTS and Dolby keep changing their processor sounds.

Or buy a solid power amplifier used and a pre with it, like Emotiva and be done with it. I am assuming that your budget is limited.

As most have said, buying from USA is definitely cost effective. However note the foll:

1. No warranty here
2. If you get a model not sold here (usually sony or pioneer) then you may face problems with repairs

That said, do look at Denon 3100, its available for ~$500. Also there is one other seller selling Yamaha A840 @ ~$500

These two are good deals unless you are looking at a higher budget.

Thank you all for the Valuable inputs i will try to get it through Check in Baggage so it will be trouble free. Also let me know if there are any good receivers around the budget of $400. I am thinking to go for Denon S510 BT. Kindly give ur suggestions

At that budget I would buy Yamaha 379 ($280) or Yamaha 479 @$399.These are the latest models and have decent features.

VoW.. Yamaha Aventage RX A 2020 for $649 is juz unbelievable for a refurbished product... In india it is more than 1.3 Lacs...

Anyways consider Pioneer VSX 112x series on Amazon.com.. Sometimes there are crazy deals on some brands... Keep checking from time to time...

Onkyo 626, Yamaha RX V 677, Denon X 2000 for around $400 budget..

@prg966 I see that those are Refurbished items, dont we face any troubles with those in future?

I don't think you will face troubles. There is a lot of good feedback for this site online. Also you can check it when ur in the USA. If there is a defect you can return it.

I would suggest to stick to Denon and Yamaha. The pioneer has different models in the U.S. Market. So getting spares if necessary later will be a challenge.

Onkyo is the least reliable among all the brands stated above. So I would keep away from

I have been using a refurbished avr from accessories4less for several years. No complaints. Good site and good service too. Will buy again.

On Little sidetrack....
Is there a difference (from customs/import duty PoV) getting a NEW AVR or getting a refurbished/used one... I know one can get them in chekin baggage, however are they treated differently if declared/caught by customs...
How do they (Customs) calculate the cost of the refurbished or used item...

I have a abroad trip scheduled soon, and planning to buy used AVR in my check-in baggage :)

TIA

Ajay

Hmmm.. I have been using Onkyo AVR for more than 10 yrs and i have never had any issues with them so far... In these 10 yrs, i have owned 2 models of Non HDMI AVR & an HDMI AVR for more than 2 yrs time...
