Planning to Purchase AV Receiver from USA Need Suggestions

Hmmm.. I have been using Onkyo AVR for more than 10 yrs and i have never had any issues with them so far... In these 10 yrs, i have owned 2 models of Non HDMI AVR & an HDMI AVR for more than 2 yrs time...

I have nothing against onkyo's. I have never used one. I'm just passing on info that I read about online. Of late a few models run hot and have issues with HDMI. Any repairs would cost a lot, so if it was me, I would usually reduce my risk by buying only those receivers (including Onkyo's) which don't have a history of failures.

On Little sidetrack....

Is there a difference (from customs/import duty PoV) getting a NEW AVR or getting a refurbished/used one... I know one can get them in chekin baggage, however are they treated differently if declared/caught by customs...

How do they (Customs) calculate the cost of the refurbished or used item...

I have a abroad trip scheduled soon, and planning to buy used AVR in my check-in baggage :)

TIA

Ajay

No difference between refurb and new. Both treated the same

You are right.. Some Onkyo HDMI AVR models launched prior to 2012 had HDMI issue, over heating issues which i too have read online... But i think Onkyo have addressed this issue from 2012 models...

My Onkyo AVR 818 would run sometimes 10 Hrs a day supporting stereo, movies & DTH viewing and i never faced over heating issues or HDMI issues..

Hi,

Got my Denon X3100 from amazon.de couple of days ago. Working perfectly fine. So don't hesitate in getting AVR from abroad. Yes your warranty on AVR won't carry in India. You will be required to ship back the model if it fails.

This is the risk you should keep in mind while comparing rates. You will surely get much cheaper rates from abroad including shipping and customs.

You can choose AVR which suites your requirement and budget.

Hi,

I got it from Europe and hence didn't require any converter. I cannot audio quality as I had yet not pair it with my Blu-ray and also need to purchase media player. As of now I didn't like the sound from my PSB and its bit boomy. I need to run Audyssey and couple of tweaks to get better results.

I ordered it online and was shipped from Italy by DHL carrier. Shipment and customs was paid in advance.

Will give complete review once I complete my set-up.

How much did it cost?

you can get 220v model in US. pl try samstores.com. i hv one yamaha avr working since 12 yrs which is a 110 v model and the denon working since 4 yrs which is a 220 v model. Price are cheap in US and it is worth bringing.

My advice - unless you are getting a irresistible deal, buy it from India for peace of mind. I have faced issues with short lived local adapters when I brought xbox from US, but microsoft helped me with a free India adapter in the long run.
