I have really no idea on media players.. nowadays TVs has capability to read usb drive.. say samsung which could read almost all videos formats. so portable hdd is not enough? if not HDMI enabled PC/Laptop will not solve this problem?

or is it PC replacement? Please give some idea... why we might need this?
