power and amplification

i replaced the 500 watt step down converter to a 1000 watt one. sound totally opened up. harshness is gone!!! the midrange is smooth and the highs sizzle.

the room is only 10 foot by 14 foot so the rotel is good enough i guess. but i still will get better amps in the days to come.

GREAAAT ....... we all have to yet understand fully the 'flow and exact characteristics of electricity' .......

especially for those who use 110v amps, i think the step down convertor is a huge factor. i noticed this in a boston acoustics ipod speaker earlier as well. i changed the step down convertor and the sound immediately improved. so the importance of proper power supply cannot be stressed enough.

The thread is educating me about the names which had not heard before.
Has anyone heard an indian company called 'nine'. It is from pune. They claim to produce amp producing completely flat response.
The cost of a 35w amp was quoted around 25k to me. Now that is a huge cost for unknown brand. They told me that they are more into custom installations.

Hi Jaudere,

Do you have any address or phone no for the 'nine' company in Pune. I was there recently and dropped into the Cadence factory. I was very impressed by what I heard and saw there, including the prices of the equipment.

Regards.

my electrician installed another socket near the main one. this time he installed one of 15 ampere. the original one was 5 ampere. he told me that the 15 ampere one is capable of generating 1.5 kv while the 5 ampere one can only generate under 1 kv. my amp seems to have opened up even more with the 15 ampere one.

@OP, try to remove the converter from the chain; Since 110V power supply is only in US, those companies who sell in several countries have transformers with extra tappings in the trafos. It makes sense for them to source trafos with multi tappings though they are a little more expensive as cost of inventory holding cost of trafos of different voltages is much more high.

I've read about this extra tapping in posts of one of our FMs who converted a Behringer active X-over working on 110V to 220V by just using the extra tap lying in the amp. I had a NAD pre-amp working on 110V which I sold to one of the FMs. I have also advised him on the conversion thing. He took he advise FM who did the modding job on the Behringer and could do the conversion easily. It would surely make a world of difference to the SQ. I'm not mentioning the names of FMs as I'm not sure if they would like their names to be revealed. PM me and I'll pass on the info after seeking their approval.

if by this you mean physically modding the amp, i wouldn't do that. anyway my sonus faber concertos cry for a more powerful amp. so i plan on getting another one and selling this. thanks.

I BELIEVE THERE ARE MANY MORE STEREO AMPLIFIERS WHICH ARE ALSO TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE QUALITY RACE. I HAVE ONE CLASSIC AUDIO 6.10 AMPLIFIER ITS A CHINEASE SS AMP. 70 WATTS PC. HAS BEEN BUILT AIMING AMERICAN CUSTOMERS. WITH QUALITY COMPONENTS. IN THE INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER I HAVE CYRUS 8VS2 AND HAVE COME ACROSS NAIM NAIT 5i VINCENT AUDIO 100 WATTS TUBE PRE PLUS POWER AMP. ( INTEGRATED). BUT THIS CLASSIC OUT BEAT EVERY OTHERS BY ITS TIMINGS DYNAMIC, WARM, NATURALITY, NON DISTORTED SOUND. IT CAN DRIVE LOW SENSITIVE SPEAKERS TOO. MORE OVER GOOD TUBE AMPLIFIER EVEN WITH 30 WATTS CAN OUTBEAT A 150 WATTS SS AMPLIFIER. SO AMPLIFIER IS THE HEART OF THE MUSICAL CHAIN.
