Hi,

I am facing few problems while setting up my Shure M97xE Cartridge to my Technics SL1210 MK5 TT.

The problem I am facing is I am not sure which end of the headshell top will the screws be fitted. Will it be at the end close to me or at the farthest end on the top? Also the cartridge is not fixing firm with the headshell as its moving a bit between the farthest and near end of the headshell.

Now why is this happening and what's the technique followed while fixing the cartridge to this Technics Headshell.

Please help.

Hi,

Please have a look at my Headshell picture (ignore the cartridge picture). If you see the picture the 2 screws are fitted further inside.

But in my case its not sitting tight and is moving in those 2 front gaps on the headshell where the screws are fitted. Now how do I make it firm?

And 2nd question is where do I fit the screws?Should it b fitted further in like what's shown in the picture below?Or they should be fitted somewhere near where Technics is written on the headshell?

Please help.

Hi,

You can use specers

Hai Manua,

Fix the screw and nut such that the nut is on the top, and tighten it from the bottom using a screw driver, pl refer the picture posted by you.

Hi,

@Manua,it is not as simple as fitting the cartridge towards the front or back of the headshell.

The cartridge has to be aligned using an alignment gauge and then tightened in the headshell.

You can download the Technics owners manual from here.

Technics SL-1210 Owners Manual, Service Manual, Schematics, Free Download | Vinyl Engine

It gives a brief discription of how to mount the cartridge ,but for best performance you should down load the protractor for the SL1210 from here(scroll down) and use it to align your cartridge.

Cartridge Alignment Protractors | Free Turntable, Tonearm & Cartridge Tools | Vinyl Engine

If you still have problems contact a forum member who has experience in setting up TT's in your city/town to set up your TT.

I would recomend that you read the articles on Vinyl Engine to get a hang of setting up TT's.It is not rocket science.

Rajiv

P.S. to tighten the screws get yourself a pair of tweezers to hold the nuts while you tighten the screws,if you are not able to hold them with your fingers.

But the nut will be in the bottom and the screw will be put through the top.Isn't it?

Hi,

What I have understood is the following. Please correct me if I am wrong :

1)Pick up the headshell and place the shell weight (which is supplied seperately along with the TT) just below the top of the headshell aligned parallelly to the headshell.
2)Place the screw from top of the headshell and slide it through the hole of the headshell through the shell weight.
3)Then pick up a nut and put it below the shell weight and let the screw pass it through and hold it so that the nut doesn't fall.
4)Then slide one side of the cartridge under the shell weight through the screw where the screws will be outside the cartridge on both side.
5)The same is repeated with the other screw.
6)Then after the alignment is done tighten the screws.

Now please correct me if I am wrong in the above process?

Hi,

The Shure M97XE weighs 6.6gms.

The Technics manual states that the shell weight be used for cartridges weighing less than 6 gms.

You do not need the shell weight for this cartridge.

Have you checked and adjusted the height of the tonearm for the shure cartridge?

I suggest you get the help of a person who has experience in setting up turntables to help you.

Hi,

Shure M97XE height is 15.875mm and as per Technics manual height control position should be 0 for cartridges whose height is less than 17mm.
So where does the question arise of adjusting the height here?Kindly clarify.
