ps3 an alternative to cd player?

I am using ps3 just like u, previously I was using a sony cd player, I dont see much difference between them in clarity but missing equaliser and preset audio options like jazz , pop ,vocal like that...

i think ps3 is giant-killer -

better than evry damn player - rather, what arcam dircam? what also meridien piridien and also what marantz parantha-

ps3 is sony gift to full solid audiophile-

sad to say, rather, these pax may not fully and totrally agree - but just ignore- they want to spend and only spend - but see what you can do with gem of ps3 - cd player, blu-ray player, games, internet - rather it is gem within gem within gem within yet another one gem.

rather, no equal to this gem from the sony style - factor, rather, is very good:licklips:

@Suri sir, is it better than PS-1 as CD player?

P.S. :- If affirmative, I can give up the search for my first generation PS-1 lying somewhere in some carton in the loft of my house for the last few years!

nshankar, Suri is just messing around.:)
I dont think Ps3 can substitute a good cdp(I may be wrong though). If so, even Suri would have used his ps3 instead of his Marantz cdp.

It is rubbish as a CD player. I've tried mine and compared to my DAC, it was total rubbish.

Very true , ive compared with a few DAC's and also some entry level and mid range CDP and it has always failed miserably.I tried with 2 versions of PS3 actually(oldest version which had SACD playback and the version after that)

on the other hand PS3 is a very good blu ray,DVD video player.

ive read about ps1 being used as a good CD transport.

The PS3 is a great blu-ray player and pretty decent for playing back compressed audio like MP3s but it fails miserably as a CD player. I have both a PS3 slim and an old PS1, and the latter is the one i always turn to for playing back CDs.
The PS1 has a very warm analog-like sound while playing back CDs.
Bottom line, i hardly ever play CDs in the PS3.

Please.....buy PS3 only if you are a rich gamer..games are costly....Go for a CDP... but if you want a BOX which can do gaming, music, movies, surfing and all...HTPC is the way{I'll come shout from your roof top if you want:lol:}....games for PC are cheaper too:sad:.....I would have never gone for PS3 if I was not a Socom:licklips: fan.

Totally DISAGREE.
Did many side-by-side comparisons between my PS3 and Arcam Solo for CD playback and (to my ears) on every test the Arcam BEAT the PS3 to the floor. PS3 sounds utterly compressed - of course, others may disagree.

However, the PS3 is an excellent Blu-Ray player, as many others have already pointed out. Also, PS3 prices has increased after the recent upgrade to 3D capabilities, if it helps.

With reference to the last post, the PS3 now has 3D capability following a firmware update but it cannot output HD audio while putting out 3D video.

Ha ha ha, Suri, I pity you.

Reviving an old thread as I am in the same boat and a bit confused.

PS3 is my current source connected to a Marantz Amp and MS Aviano BS! The PS3's Music Setting; Audio Output frequency is set to 44.1/88.2/176.4 and the Bitmapping is set to Type 3, which I found out after some research is the optimal setting for playing CD's. Now its a decent CD player, but I feel that it lacks bass, there is no separation and the voices are a little lifeless.

How much of a difference will a dedicated CD player make? Will an entry level CD player such as the Marantz CD 5001(say a used one) will make a substantial difference?

Will a DVDP such as the Marantz DV4001/DV6001 or CA DV99 will be considered an upgrade?

Or, should I use my PS3(or get a cheap DVDP) as transport and get an external DAC?

The CD6003 would be my best bet, but lets say I am looking for cheaper alternatives here and the cheap it is, the better!

Any suggestions??

Another boring CDP replacement thread .
low cost DVDP as CDP -- Fails
PS1 -- has got real good modded users , seems to work ,mods expensive
Best one :
SB touch if u r spending for it it can be used as some decent source, with mods becomes Gold!

Haven't thought about an SB touch, but will look into it.

Also, with it comes the problem of ripping the CD and then using another PC as a source.

Though I'm no close to being an audiophile nor do I possess god ears, but I'm using Onkyo BD SP 308 and am very happy with the video and audio performance of it. Its not 3D capable and requires wired connection for net, but in sub 20k budget, I feel its the best option for a BDP which can serve as an excellent CD player
