Dear all, this is my first serious post detailing my experience in hifi, As i see few posts on tube amps particularly affordable ones i thought of sharing my views on this basic tube amp. All the experts can smile & excuse my ramblings, i am also trying to get there ... somewhere ...

Well this is a very basic hybrid amp, with a tube preamp and SS based power amplifier section. Its rated at 2.5 wpc, costs around 100USD incl shipping (china hifi site). I paid customs duty @ 1700/- and total cost was around 7000/-. Finish is quite pleasing with red & black finish and surprisingly well built feeling. It has two inputs - 1 for RCA & 1 for 3.5mm.

The amp comes with standard 6N3 tube which is not good in my opinion. I bought three more tubes, GE 5670, a couple of Russian tubes. These upgrades do not cost much as the GE comes at 500 per tube and others 300 each. of course there are other tube upgrade options which cost more than the amp itself. Even for my inexperienced ears the sound signature is discernably different with each tube & this aspect alone makes the journey into tubes worthwhile. You can buy good tubes and roll them as per your mood. This will satisfy your cravings to improve sound or try different combinations without much damage to your pocket.

I will keep my impressions simple, this really sounds splendid for vocal based music and as some reviewer said particularly female singers sound even better, do not know why! the midrange is really good and the bass though sweet is bit weak. the shrillness in the treble is greatly reduced with the GE tube but still persists and shows up in certain tracks. I normally use my Cowon O2 with FLAC songs on it and better sources should do even well.

This can be an excellent & cheaper optionfor those who seek warmth from their MP3 songs, mp3s surely sound far far better on this then all my other amps. Certain CD tracks sound so good that the amp justifies its price just playing them, they sound fantastic, during quieter evenings i feel that the voice is just floating and you can almost touch. That said the sound stage is bit weak than the topping / marantz avr and frequency response is also limited when compared to these amps. The SS amps sound fuller and have faster response i think.

All said and done this little amp sounds really good for the money and is a good stepping stone into the tube world. I do not say that its a steal but surely is a bargain and can be a very good answer for mp3 based collection. It looks good while running, the tube glow is mesmerizing at night, I keep it on during nights using it as a night bulb.

Thats it for now friends, hope you find this brief useful for those uninitiated guys like me,

Cheers.

hi, thanks for your response, i use the amp mostly with the magnat supreme 1000 FS, these speakers are quite sensitive - 92db and convey most of the details. However i keep changing the combination once in a while and use it to drive all the three sets that i have.

the best will be the magnats in a big room and the CA S30s for near field listening. Hope this clarifies your query.

hi greenhorn, the 2.5 wpc is misleading i think, this amp is surely as loud as the topping, & like a topping it also requires sensitive speakers for better results. never used them as headphone amp, though some members in the headfi forum reviewed this. as they say power from tube amps is different from the SS make, even the high end tube amps have fairly low power ratings though having enough power otherwise.

i use it to drive the diamonds also which are rated at 86db & in a small room they sound detailed enough. the info on the Indian supplier is interesting, did not know that they were selling at that price that too within the country. thanks for that bit.

I think these are good only as a preamp or a headphone amp at 2.5 WPC
PS: It's available locally, but some folks had issues with the dealer

dear Hemant, noticed the valab nos dac in your signature, can you pls post your impressions on the dac, i recently bought one from a fm and not yet used it, the output might have been damaged in transit i guess, i am keen to know how it sounds, thanks,

thanks Gautam for your feedback...do you think TP20 is required considering Q2 only delivers 2.5WPC ??

How does Q2 Compare to Norge 1000 ? does it even make it a condtendor for comparision ?

I am just looking at something low cost for my living room for everyday listening(11 X 16) and the speakers will be WD 9.1 bookshelves.

do not make your conclusions..... some lyritas are just 2.5 watts and with right speakers they sound fabulous...

the finest amp I heard is Prems modified lyrita - it is just 2.5 w RMS per channel!

slightly Dry , that is what my feeling is. Certanly great VFM , more analogish ,,,I sold - to upgrade and honestly I prefer LUSH sound.

hi kamalnv, sorry i have never listened to a norge so cannot comment. Further onto your question on power output, I am very sure that the Q2 matches the Topping in loudness, traditionally the power outputs of tube amps are quite modest when compared to the SS amps but are equally powerful. I discussed this aspect as I was considering to buy the magnat tube amp which is only 32watts but cost 44K. Hope this clarifies.

In my opinion tube buffers / amps color the sound in a likeable way (to me atleast) but the Q2 does the same when compared to the Topping. The topping is surely more detailed and has better sound stage but the voices sound really good on the Q2 (with the GE 5670 tube).

However in your case i think the wharfs are quite musical & color the sound in their own way so you may be better off with the Topping. I am sure of this as I have the wharf 9.0s myself and right now am listening to the combo. At a later stage if you really want to dabble into tubes you can buy a cheap tube buffer (like the well accepted muse / indeed tube buffers within 2k or so) and combine with the topping. By the way or you considering the Topping Dac + Amp combination or just the TP20.

thanks hemant for the inputs, by the way i am still waiting for the DAC to arrive, am very eager to see how it improves my setup. this is my first major upgrade as far as source is concerned, so expecting a significant improvement.

Cool thanks for your inputs gautam, i was thinking on MKIII Indeed Instead of topping .. You seem to own both ..any suggestions ?

I will look for a Used TP 20 if i am lucky then i will plugin the Tube - DAC/Pre...

I have the indeed's 2020S which is based on the cheaper 2024 chip. But frankly I don't find much difference between the TP20 and this. My experience with Peter was very good in all the three instances I bought from him. Cannot say the same for the topping supplier though. My powerchord was not working when I bought the topping but their response was not that good. In indeed's case he sent me another consignment when the original got stuck in customs and he always responds immediately. You can state your reqs and ask him if he can suggest a better option.
