RD Burman LP

+1 to the 'money spent to be the fan' theory.:) Coming to turntables, let us not forget that the basic turntables were not really meant to play the LPs perfectly back in that time. Getting hold of a basic turntable and playing a mass market pressed LP on it and thinking that it is absolute nirvana is not a thinking of the informed. Just like the equipment we have today like the CD players, cassette players, televisions, etc. they all range from bliss to mediocre to crap! Hence, most of the mass players produced were mediocre and were not meant to playback perfectly. To make matters worse, some were crap too. It is just senti(mental?) value or the trending term 'analog' sound that creates the hoopla.

Also, before buying these LPs, one should think that back in the day, they were available for Rs. 30-45. :D

Sorry to play the spoil-sport:o

if you think that way then you wont be able to buy any colletor's items.
remember when they were for Rs30-45, then they were avaible in thousands if not in lacs of copies. Now they are just a handul left and rest all destroyed.

true. but when i have over 3000 indian comics including the amithabh bachchan starrerer supremo and computer singh and super amitabh, it makes sense to pay 1-2-3-4-5 k rs for that one title i ve longed forever. but i d do that only a handful times in my life and it d pain me to see rising prices even if it means that my stock value shoots through the roof. i never got em to sell and earn profits.
Laakhon mein Ek record for only 15000. Now that's a deal

I am thinking of making a rule that if its mp3 is available, I won't get the LP.
liked the sarcasm.
instead of mp3, try cassettes. great players including trandlenberg are available at not so expensive prices and the SQ difference is mostly unrecognisable.
I still remember Vidhu Vinod Chopra explaining what RDB wanted to do originally for 1942 A Love Story.

please explain it here and do tag me. i d like to listen to it.
lastly i wanted to add bhaskarcans post but it was too long to quote.here s my response to that-
.... now wheres that thanks button buddy?
now the saas bhi kabhi bahu thi..- look at the covers condition friends. it seems like a new-old-stock and could sell for that cost. people dont understand this and come up with higher prices for used lps of same title once the title sells for high price.

Apart from the good music, R.D.Burman vinyls excel on account of nice recordings considering the contemporary hindi music vinyls. I am not saying that other vinyls sound quite bad, but Panchamda's deliberate recording on stereo separations and instrumentals placements often create a magic while listening to them.

I also have the entire Bengali music collection created by him. Trust my word, the sound quality is awesome even though done for a regional language.

I have started digitizing the vinyls for the time I am on the move and also for easy listening. That would also cause less harm for the vinyls that I have.

I am left with may be 8-9 LPs of him which I may not procure owing to astronomically high prices, hence the digitized version will suffice.

Whoa....What a discussion.....

why, I've been to a used record seller, this one literally a scrap dealer and he quoted ten times the usual price for a R D Burman LP. When asked why he told me that people from Mumbai come and buy any R D Burman LP he has without even looking at the record itself.

Who are those guys ?

Our beloved OLX and Quiker resellers. Quoting astronomical prices.

I've had the pleasure to have a word with a few of them and Boy, are they greedy ?

Their greed drools even on phone.

NEVER BOUGHT FROM THEM

Instead locally spread the word (Thanks to Reuben for this idea) and slowly build up a decent collection.

There's a rage about R D Burman, the fun part is guys who don't understand anything about him and his work will also buy the records to show off and use the record as a coffee table book item. I've seen people doing that and it does piss me off big time.

But can't be helped, I guess.

I appreciate this word "Coffee Table Book". That's the fact now. Even if any Angel pressing other than Panchamda's music has become a collector's item. I have seen people, not knowing anything on the tracks and nuances of rhythm, announce themselves being R.D.Burman collector. I am used to Kolkata market, price is shooting up like hell. Hence stopped buying any other vinyls and looking for relatives and friends parting of their vinyls.

Very true. Prices are prohibitive.
I don't even want to talk about R D Burman's 78 rpms. They are rarely seen. Heard about an eBay listing once with bids starting at 500 Pounds!

True. I have a few 78 rpm records of R.D.Burman and I procured those from Kolkata streets @ 100 each. There is Bengali Movie "Raajkumari" which was only released in 78 rpm. Chote Nawab, Pati Patni and Teesra Kaun were also released in 78, I mean full songs.

Yes, that's the kind of prices one should be asked.
Rajkumari has some really good work by Pancham. Can recall some Asha songs. Mostly remember movie for Tanuja though :P
I guess I should visit kolkata before any more zeros get added Ha Ha

OK I will ask my dealer if a good conditioned 78 can be sourced. Till then I will share the 78 rpm rip from Raajkumari.

Hate to play the spoilsport (a disclaimer that I too am an RD fan), many of his famous work are plagiarism :(. Also about the skyrocketing rates, I have no idea why buys LP for such obscene amount of money. I did not buy the Burning Train LP offered at Rs. 600 in Kolkata street market about an year back. LP condition was very good. I let that go despite someone telling me that it sells for 2-3K. However, nobody quoted 2-3K for the Burning train in Kolkata. This is done only by some greedy sellers mostly found on OLX & Quikr.

Guys...
What a great discussion going on here.
I can certainly claim that very less people who actually make RDB market expensive...know about his music in deep...Everyone hates buying from OLX and else...Then question is who is buying it and initiating high prices in market..Only 1 thing can STOP this...HMV/RPG should start bringing out their hidden treasures and reprint them to classic PEASD version....I feel....
